Chas is just pointing out that everything evolves and the OED is merely a chronicler of change and adaptation.

Thumbsup

I'd've marked him down for citing non-English literature as examples of English literature, but the others already had that covered.

If he hadn't said it, I would have.

I have to confess, though, that I have the grumpy-old-man syndrome too,
(now to be renamed the grumpy-Teen-skeptic-go! syndrome)
specifically when a word's meaning evolves away from the original enough to cause confusing / inefficiency.

E.g. On yesterday's flight home, we were told that "... in the event of an emergency, we will be evacuated..."

When I hear that, I always think... don't trouble yourselves, in the event of an emergency I will have already shat myself.

RE: OXFORD DID WHAT NOW?
Those words will probably still be listed as slang, or don't they draw that distinction any more ? The fact that Kiasu made it in shows that they take into account regional variations... Holy shit, OED is just gonna take over every language in the world.

Re: OXFORD DID WHAT NOW?
All languages including English especially, are smack full of words considered proper terms that originated as slang or even abbreviations.

Okay, Cop, bug, crazy, cool, etc. plenty just get made up out of nowhere over time too.

Same things even happened with telegraphing, ASAP doesn't get flack since it's old to us now. People complain aboot text speech but it's not all that new. And lots of it that's extra dumb comes and goes.

RE: OXFORD DID WHAT NOW?
It's the online version they've added the words to.

Give me your argument in the form of a published paper, and then we can start to talk.

But let us not become all kinda like puritanical.

Hmmmm....I thought by now it has been well established that we are several steps in that direction. I humbly give you Conservepedia as an example. Thumbsup

Language evolves, and this is a perfect example of why natural selection does not always mean optimal selection and that nothing that has evolved is designed perfectly.
