Obama Frees Chelsea Manning
I find this very interesting.

Chelsea was a whistle blower who changed gender, remained in a male prison as female and tried to kill herself twice.

Chelsea admitted her wrong doing, repented, stood trial, and got the stiffest sentence ever for this type of thing - 35 years.

Apparently Assange (WikiLeaks) once said that he would come to the states to stand trial if she was freed.

Bad precedence IMO......

We have informational security for good reason. Commuting Manning's sentence sends a bad message to those who hold security clearances --- "We're not all THAT serious about this shit".....

Just because it makes some people happy -- doesn't mean it's the right thing to do.....

I think it's hilarious, in light of Dumpy's "We love Wikileaks" from last week.

As far as I recall nothing that she released jeopardized national security. She's served several years already in jail, got a bad conduct discharge, and was relatively young at the time.

She's already been punished, don't see the need to take her entire life away from her.

You've never had a clearance, have you???

When you pull the kind of shit she did -- you can expect to be in a cell for a long, long time.... That's the incentive to keep you from being an "on the spot journalist" -- who second guesses what's a matter of national security, and what's not.....

I'd say she got off light -- a couple of days for each violation - running concurrent....

...

They should have gave life without parole....

Make whatever case you want against this individual, make sure you forget about how much Trump was goading Wiki.

Oh and while we are talking about national security and potential death, lets just fucking ignore Bush's two failed wars that cost 100,000s of civilian deaths on top of thousands of military deaths. One war based on a FUCKING LIE.

Our leaks would not happen if you didn't have an asshole GOP who guts funding to everything to fund the weapons industry and tax breaks for corporate welfare.

Even if true, this is completely beside the point. That would just mean we were lucky. But what about next time? Lives are potentially at stake with these leaks.

@DonaldTrump, Patriotism is not honoring your flag no matter what your country/leader does. It's doing whatever it takes to make your country the best it can be as long as its not violent.

As one who has had clearance, I have to admit I'm torn about this.

AFAIK (and I'm willing to be corrected on this if the facts show otherwise) nothing she leaked actually endangered citizens or was a threat to national security. *edit to add - I see someone else has already made this point at the exact same time I was typing mine.*

John Walker, on the other hand (he's now deceased) was a different story as he passed national security secrets. Walker, however, would have been eligible for parole in 2015; Manning was due to be incarcerated for 35 years.

So, on one hand, it's clear that harsh sentences need to be meted out to those who endanger national security. But it's also clear that Manning case became a pawn between Republican hawks and the Obama administration.

This whole thing reeks of politics regardless of what one's stance on the issue is. Especially with Julian Assange's statement(s) on the matter.

Maybe Julian figures Trump will return the favour and do the same.
