Well ya see, there you can argue that it's at least proportionate. Maybe not the right response, but the crime is roughly proportional to the punishment. When it's the situation previously described with the teenage mother and the drugs and all the punishment seems waay over the top, and IMO the principle employed was the idea that maybe others would take fright and... not have sex??? Not have abortions? Not do drugs while pregnant? Even if it worked, it's unfair to the individual who gets hung out to dry.
