Olympics opening ceremony
Anyone else watching it (I heard that it is being broadcast non-live in the evening in the USA)? I am a bit apathetic when it comes to the Olympics. I'm sure that I'll do what I do every 4 years and tune in for the occasional interesting (to me) events... but it is never something I get overly excited about.

I was intrigued, however, to see how Danny Boyle's opening ceremony would portray Britain... and (so far) it was OKish. Up to a point. Celebrating the NHS took me by surprise, a bit. It's certainly something that Brits can be proud of (it isn't perfect, but it is rather special) but it seemed a bit out of place in a sporting ceremony... although it linked-in nicely with the children's story telling, which the UK has made a good job of. And there won't be many youngsters who don't know who J.K.Rowling is.

The music section was pretty good. Boyle was always going to make one of Britain's biggest exports a key factor in the ceremony.

And the comedy elements sum us up, pretty well. Never something that Beijing could call its own. Dodgy

Falling asleep with the sporting countries marching in... and it's still only at C.

I've always been kinda so-so on the Olympics too. Just always had a hard time getting into it. Although the last winter Olympics here in Canada was pretty exciting for me. Probably because it was close to home, and we did well. I gotta ask...who's J.K. Rowling?

Just visiting.

Shows how much I know, then. Undecided

She's the author of the Harry Potter series.

Just reached the Es... why is it that I can never see the country name Djibouti without my mind inserting the word "shake" before it?

I will watch, but no way they will ever be able to out do the last one, The Beijing opening was THE most spectacular thing I have ever seen, in my entire life.

Edit : I liked the humor with the Queen, but it was rather boring. Beijing was far better.

The idea & design of the torch was very well done. And it was followed by Pink Floyd. Win win.

I was gonna watch it but it was at some ungodly hour of the morning, 8 or 9 or something awful like that so I skipped it.
My flatmate recorded it so I might get around to watching it at some point.
I suspect it sucks in comparison to the last games.

Cross dressing and homosexual smooching. What's not to like?

Give me your argument in the form of a published paper, and then we can start to talk.
