Wait, back the truck up. What!?

I'm surprised you've never heard of that. Smile I wonder if that's still taught in schools??

I know right. Each September 11 a history teacher I know hands out a quiz with a list names on it -- all important and the "never forget" ideal...

Kids are supposed to explain the significance or name the date -- however the questions are framed.

They've all been forgotten.

I'm telling you Muffs, the answers to some questions would make you weep...'December 7,1941 was described as "a day that will live in infamy" what happened on that day?'

Most common answer Kennedy was shot. Facepalm

I don't remember what I did last Tuesday....

I'm sure as hell not going to worry about what happened in 1858......

Fine with me. Just don't let any of the lawyers or politicians get away.

What do they charge you? Are they on retainer?

Actually, the question itself is pointless and only highlights just how flawed it is to teach history as a series of 'facts' and data points to be learned for a test and forgotten.

So what that the Japaneses surprise attack on Pearl Harbor happened on December 7th? That date, outside of placing it on a timeline in order to establish a wider historical context, is an utterly useless factoid. What does knowing that fact do? Fuck all. If you're going to teach about history, there are far greater and more applicable lessons to be learned from studying the geopolitics that lead Japan to faux peace talks before launching their sneak attack, and the repercussions of drawing the United States into the Second World War. Remembering a date for a test gets you nothing, while attempting to understand the what and why that lead Japan to attack the United States might put into greater clarity such contemporary actions as the conflict between Israel and Palestine.

History should be taught as dependency and causation, not the mere memorization of factoids. Dodgy
