Pluto is a Planet
And don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Smile

(including NDT who says it isn't a planet and that we all just need to get over it)

Is Pluto About to be Reinstated as a Planet?

Nope, I'm with NDT on this.

Clearing your cosmic neighborhood does seem to be the sticking point. With the definition offered by the guy in the article every rock in the Kuiper Belt is a planet.

RE: Pluto is a Planet
If Pluto is a planet, then so is Ceres, Eris, Sedna, Makemake, Quaoar and any other near spherical object we discover out there... It seems to me that the only reason people think it should be classed as a planet is because its round.

Before the discovery of further Kuiper Belt objects, Pluto was just considered to be a bit of an oddball planet (literally), but now its obvious that its one of a whole collection of objects with similar characteristics.

It has some planetary characteristics, some associated with comets, some with asteroids... So it really needs its own category, and so they created the "dwarf planet" label. Ceres was previously classed as an asteroid, but has since been reclassified as a dwarf planet.

It doesn't make it any less interesting as an object, quite the opposite... I'm looking forward to the New Horizons probe snapping the first ever detailed photographs of the surface.

Pluto is a dog.

I prefer fantasy, but I have to live in reality.

RE: Pluto is a Planet
I'll be okay with people calling pluto a planet if
A) everything in the kuiper belt falls together into a single mass and we call it pluto
B) the kuiper belt goes away and Pluto is the only remaining piece.

Until then, it's a comet that people won't accept as such.

No, Goofy is a dog. Pluto is some sort of strange, lesser being concept of a dog. A dwarf dog I suppose.

Goofy is to Pluto as a Human is to... Chimpanzee...

Interesting thought.
