Poem: Why does my church have a fire alarm?
He was just a young boy with a wondering mind.
His question was simple, but one of a kind.
Too young to know better about what he would ask,
The answer was given "You ought to know that."

But all of his wonder and thinking so deep,
left him feeling alone, astray from the sheep.
So back in he went mind, body, and soul,
truth simply avoided, returned to the fold.

But as time went on, in the back of his mind,
the question still lingered with each red "exit" sign.
Until finally one day he would ask it again,
but this time he prayed for the answers within.

"Lord God, I fear you will judge me untrue,
so lets keep this question between me and you.
With divine protection keeping us all from harm,
why does my church need a fire alarm?"

"Is it to warn me that satan has breached the front door,
in the form of a pagan, a gay, or a whore?
Or have codes and restrictions on you been enforced,
to keep us here safely, if your house were torched?"

"Surely, if so, you would have to agree,
that's money well wasted... between you and me.
We know with your power, your strength, and your might,
you could render all flames unable to light."

"So before you I seek, and by your will I'll find,
the answer to this simple question of mine."
He said his amen and opened his eyes,
turned on the t.v. and to his surprise.

The story was awful, two men lost their lives,
one critically injured, but still she survives.
The pulpit was lit with hellfire ablaze,
the smoke was the message in a black billowing haze.

He cried back at god and said "What have you done?
Your answer did not have to hurt anyone!
I try and I try to defend you as love,
and these are the answers to prayers from above!"

Feeling quite guilty he sat in despair,
as he pondered the answer to his simple prayer.
Was this a sign, or was this by chance,
or was this god's plan made up in advance.

The days went on and the story did unfold,
no alarm in the building not even a strobe.
His mind it was shifted from guilt to relief,
now knowing the damage was not caused by he.

How quickly life shifts with one simple prayer,
when the answer is clearly god just isn't there.
He lives now by logic with reason and charm,
over one simple question about a fire alarm!

* I wrote this for two reasons:
1. I was bored
2. I realized that a church having a fire alarm is, in theory, kinda funny!

Well the church by me has a lightening rod on the roof, which I always found ridiculous.

Amazing poem my friend. Well done.

Churches have fire alarms because they'd violate the Fire Marshall's rules. (Stating the obvious, but still). Good poem though.

Thanks... lightening rods on churches are funny too. I mean what, did they think we weren't going to notice?

This sounds like the perfect opportunity for God to send holy fire upon them for taking his children's free will away on the matter. You know, since God's such a stickler for that sort of thing. Then he can smite their families, and rip the alarms from the walls in a dazzling display.

I'm waiting, God.

Great poem.

Re lightning: the Christ the redeemer statue in Rio gets hit all the time, the pictures look pretty neat.

That does not disprove god.

That proves that Zeus doesn't like the new guy stealing his credit.
