Just thinking that 'fact', 'principle' and 'logic' may tend to overcook the existential question.... Smile

RE: Poets' Corner
Beauty

The whitewash of fresh, pillowy snow
meets the milky fog of the sky,
as ghostly shapes of winter birds
float in the air, weightless like a dream,
before they alight on the feeder.

I let this improbable beauty
soak into my soul,
wipe my mind clean
of pessimistic thoughts --
it surrounds me like sweet memory
of a lover's embrace
from a happier past.

I will try to hold on to this feeling
in the coming days of poisonous news
of a world gone mad --
try to remember that beauty does still exist
and not everything is hopelessly sad.

...

You can only blame god and his 'intelligent design' for it.

I commented on it earlier and now I have added a few more lines to it.

For those of you who missed it:

Predation

I hate god,
I don't believe in the bastard
but I hate him anyway,
for blasting away
at the hapless victims
of his 'intelligent' design.

Eat and be eaten,
that’s the commandment,
obeyed by all of his creatures:
the lion rips the throat of the zebra,
a pack of wolf tears a deer apart,
the fox devours the rabbit,
preying mantis munches on butteflies,
venus flytrap digests insects,
humans, on top of the food chain
kill, use, torture them all,
including their own kind.

It would have been nothing
to the ‘omnipotent’ 'father'
to base his design of all of us
on photosynthesis,
but he liked the idea of
pain, fear and suffering,
probably as a form of
divine entertainment.

We did not deserve this:
falling prey to predation:
what we do to each other
and to all creations
on this magnificent planet.

Since I could not touch him,
even if existed,
I transfer my ire
to those who pretend to love him
and to speak in his name.

Amen.

RE: Poets' Corner
All that talk about "assisted suicide" inspired me to write this silly poem. Once you think about it, you can't help seeing the parallel! Evil_monster

Forums

Life is like a huge internet forum
with life-long membership,
where you can be a valued member
with high likes and rep points,
bum along with nothing,
or you can be banned for a time (jail),
sometime permanently (execution),
and you can leave it with a flounce (suicide)
if you think you have had enough.

The moderators are not always moderate,
the software is full of glitches
and the quote you worked so hard over
is simply snipped if deemed to be too long.
If assisted suicide were legal,
I would soon ask some merciful doctor
to end my membership for good
and free me from this terrible obsession
of talking to my keyboard.

I have done the science and the art,
I have had my fling with humanity,
I have been smart and dumb and then smart again,
I have looked into, and beyond, eternity.
In all these wanderings, in all these years,
I never understood the final, missing piece:
If I am out of hope and beyond despair,
why do I still, stubbornly, obtusely think
that I communicate
when I pontificate
on my internet link?

Very, very good old man. I don't find it nearly as silly as you seem to think. Thumbsup

RE: Poets' Corner
Thank you, GirlyMan.

A discussion with Luminon about 'hope' and 'winning' inspired the following poem.

The path

Death is a distant horizon
when you embark on your quest,
when you want to test your strength,
conquer some peaks...
...the blue ocean, the lava-spewing crater
speak to you with promise of adventure,
you want to venture to the depth of secret caves,
swim with the sharks,
ride an elephant in the jungle,
or, maybe,
read your nobel-prized poem at a recitation
or, at least, discover the laws of gravitation.

You see pain, suffering, injustice among men,
you want to show them how to fix the world,
organize their lives, reduce the waste,
stop the destruction --
never realizing: in your innocent hope
you are not even a distraction
to the powers that be --
you are just an insignificant,
slightly annoying bee in their bonnet...
...but you don't see it yet.

Then you get older,
'wiser' you like to say,
not wanting to admit: you are tired
to the bone of more and more of the same.
You suspect the species is not quite sane
and you should quit before you are fired
before you bore them beyond endurance
you should bury your head deep in the sand
before you reach your death
at the ultimate end.
