Also: And I feel that I am kind of bragging, here. Don't really want to do that. But does anyone ever look back, at something you wrote, and say: "Damn! That's good! I can't believe I wrote that!" Obviously I'm just a guy, spitting stuff out on the internet. No books or fame of any kind. But I really think some of it is pretty good!

That happens occasionally, but more often I look back and I'm embarrassed!
Despite that, I'm going to take a risk and post a poem here...
Some background, I guess: I wrote this when I was coming out of my Christianity, I was deeply entrenched in biblical literature, so I decided to take some of it and transform it into statements that are ... truer. It's really just some quick thoughts.

I Am
that I Am.
I affirm that I
Am all there is in this world.
This life that is but a vapor
Begins and ends
with only me.
I Am the Alpha and Omega,
the author of my own decisions.
Knowledge is the lamp unto my feet
Reason is the light unto my path.
I hunger and thirst for Right,
For answers, for evidence, for explanation.
I will spend my life building up treasures which neither thieves can steal nor moths destroy:
Knowledge and understanding.

RE: Poets' Corner (Serious Poems)
In this empty vessel I exist
I do nothing else
I exist and observe things as they pass by
Rarely do I interfere
I act when I am expected to
I do what I am expected to
I am worthless
Yet they tell me I'm priceless
All I do is exist
I do nothing else

Wow! Nothing to be ashamed of with this one! Wish I had written it!

This is how I see god. Were you thinking of god when you wrote this?

RE: Poets' Corner (Serious Poems)
When I ask you to listen to me
and you start giving me advice,
you have not done what I asked.
When I ask you to listen to me
I shouldn't feel that way,
you are tramplin on my feelings.
When I ask you to listen to me
and you feel you have to do something
to solve my problem,
you have failed me,
strange as that my seem.
Listen! All I ask is that you listen.
Don't talk or do--just hear me.
Advice is cheap; 20 cents will get
you both Dear Abby and Billy Graham
in the same newspaper.
And I can do for myself; I am not helpless.
Maybe discouraged and faltering,
but not helpless.
When you do something for me that I can
and need to do for myself,
you contribute to my fear and
inadequacy.
But when you accept as a simple fact
that I feel what I feel,
no matter how irrational,
then I can stop trying to convince
you and get about this business
of understanding what's behind
this irrational feeling.
And when that's clear, the answers are
obvious and I don't need advice.
Irrational feelings make sense when
we understand what's behind them
Perhaps that's why prayer works, sometimes,
for some people--because God is mute,
and he doesn't give advice or try
to fix things.
God just listens and lets you work
it out for yourself.
So please listen, and just hear me.
And if you want to talk, wait a minute
for your turn--and I will listen to you

RE: Poets' Corner (Serious Poems)
Today I met a great new friend
Who knew me right away
it was funny how she understood
All I had to say

She listened to my problems
She listened to my dreams
We talked about love and life
She'd been there, too, it seems

I never once felt judged by her
She knew just how I felt
She seemed to just accept me
And all the problems I'd been dealt

She didn't inderrupt me
Or need to have her say
She just listened very patiently
And didn't go away

I wanted her to understand
How much this meant to me
But as I went to hug her
Something startled me

I put my arms in front of me
And went to pull her nearer
And realized that my best friend
Was nothing but a mirror

"All I do is exist"
^God doesn't do that
Although I like the thought, hadn't even entered my mind ^^
