RE: Poets' Corner
Whenever my sense of self importance becomes over-inflated,
I ponder a fossil and understand that in the grand scheme of the universe,
I too am just one small organism that exists for a brief moment and then is gone.
I see that the cosmos carries forward and cares not one whit that I was here,
and I am humbled.

Whenever I feel small and insignificant,
and that nothing I do really matters.
I ponder a fossil and understand that even the tiniest and
simplest organism can leave an impression that lasts an eternity,
and I wonder what I will do with the opportunity to leave a legacy.
Perhaps the cosmos does not care, but I can,
and that is empowering

RE: Poets' Corner
This may not be a poem, as such, but there is the little song that my dear departed Miranda-kitty composed many years ago:

(Sung to the tune of "My Darling Clementine")
I want tuna, give me tuna!
Can you hear me? Are you dead?
If you do not give me tuna,
I will piss upon your head!

All right, Schubert, I'm not... I mean she wasn't. Not even Weird Al, for that matter...

"I like theories you can test."

RE: Poets' Corner
Void of Gwyneth

I never needed to know you
to love you
I never needed to be right
to be true

I needed to love
I needed to breathe
I needed to dance the dance of numbers
beneath the trees
to sing of longing
with the breeze
and the wind has past
and the sun has set
and the stilling of the evening
empty promises yet
not empty
the void

I needed to love
I needed to eat
I needed to paint the pigment of reality
upon the canvas of my feast
to call myself alive
myself, to meet
and the moments have past
and the faces in passing a blur
when all that we can ever be
can only be as we were
not empty
the void

I never needed you to know me
to love you
I never needed you to verify
my life

Only needed to live
to die

My own personal response to Emily Dickinson

(I hope I got all my syllables right)

She said I got
My eye put out, but not so sir
In the dark I glow

(And he's not thinking religion when he says Jesus)

When Sue Wears Red

by Langston Hughes
When Susanna Jones wears red
Her face is like an ancient cameo
Turned brown with the ages.

Come with a blast of trumpets,
Jesus!

When Susanna Jones wears red
A queen from some time-dead Egyptian night
Walks once again.

Blow trumpets, Jesus!

And the beauty of Susanna Jones in red
Burns in my heart a love-fire sharp like pain

Sweet silver trumpets,
Jesus!

Didn't she play a police woman in the 1970's?
