"had to write poems"
deadline driven artistry
is not how it works

Dodgy

Nothing wrong with it. We sometimes stumble across means of expression based on the requirements of the moment.

AttT, liked "Blue".

Bowing DLJ, have mercy on my poor unpoetic soul.

Who is "ku"
And why is he always hi
Outside of Colorado
And states where it is legal
The point is moot and nye.

RE: Poets' Corner
Lyrics, not poetry:

It's a gentle rain that lands
upong the ground inside my heart.
It's no great flood, threatening
to wash my world away,
just a soft little drizzle that
maybe softens up the earth.
But it washes out the poisons
and gives me a fresh start --
a cool wet night, giving promise
of the coming day
sweet and damp, the night
allows the new day's rebirth.

You can keep your gully-washers,
you can keep your hurricanes,
your howling winds and thunderclaps --
I'll keep this gentle rain,
You can tell yourself this is one more storm
that too will surely pass
and while this sweet rain washes me clean
you can delve into the past.

It's a sunny morning, and last night
is a distant miserable dream,
just one more page in my story
and surely not the last.
We came and went like a spring sunshower
and now a morning dawns anew.
I tried to speak my feelings
but you did not like the theme --
it was just one more perspective and
didn't fit the mold you'd cast.
But now the night is gone, with it the rain
and I'll drink the morning dew.

You can keep your feelings, keep your thoughts
and tell yourself you're right.
You can batten down my hatches if it
gets you through the night.
You can tell yourself this is one more storm
that too will surely pass.
No doubt it'll serve to tell the tale
in the mold you've cast.

RE: Poets' Corner
I'm a new member here so not sure if I'm posting this in the right way. Anyway... here's a poem for exactly this time of year from my book '80 Poems for Atheists'

The Nativity Play and the Smart-ass Kid

The situation:
A teacher arranging the nativity play
With a class of little dears
Apart from one little smart-ass kid
With knowledge beyond his years

Teacher:
Who would like to play Gabriel
The angel who passes the news
To Joseph and his wife Mary
That she’ll have baby Jesus soon?

Actually Miss, said the smart-ass kid:

In Matthew he appears to Joseph
But only in a dream
In Luke he appears just to Mary
But real enough to be seen

Teacher:
OK, so who wants to play the part of a king
One of the three wise men
Who follow the bright star in the East
All the way to Bethlehem?

Actually Miss, said the smart-ass kid:

Matthew just talks about Magi
And three’s just the number of gifts
He tells us no actual number of kings
There could have been twenty or six

And also Miss, said the smart-ass kid:

The star led them first to Jerusalem
Then Herod had to tell them the way
The star reappeared sometime later
And took them to where Jesus lay

And furthermore Miss, said the smart-ass kid:

In the next science lesson you give us
I’d appreciate it, if you’re able
To tell us how a star can move here and there
And then hover above a stable?

Teacher:
So who wants to play the innkeeper
Who says he has no room
And makes them head to a stable
Where the birth of Jesus ensues?

Actually Miss, said the smart-ass kid:

None of the Gospels mention an inn
And none of them mention a stable
So why keep pretending that any of this
Is anything more than a fable?

Teacher:
Oooh you are wicked, you smart-ass kid
I suppose the next thing you’ll be telling me is that…
There was no ox or ass in the stable or
There were no camels anywhere or
It didn’t all happen on December 25th or
There was no census or
Herod was not on the throne at the time or
There is no historical evidence for the massacre of the innocents or
That Matthew’s story was made up to fit Old Testament prophesies or
That the prophesies were not actually prophesies at all, just unrelated passages or
That the gospels of Mark and John don’t mention a thing about the birth of Jesus!

Well actually Miss, said the smart-ass kid…

RE: Poets' Corner
This is my art
My sliver tongue finding its way to paper
Taking its reader by the hand and past the horizon
To pastures new and taboo

This is my art
Coming from the heart
To evoke thoughtful discussion
Or provoke anger with repercussions
One verse I write with my pen
Reaches a million men

This is my art
For I understand the power of words
For it was the rain that helped flowers bloom
Not the thunder
For my sword may break
But my words cut deep

Words are powerful
Use them well

Oh no. He's here - God

RE: Poets' Corner
Dream

in the lands crafted by sleep
I wander
transcending all barriers
I'm with my girl
me as Superman
and she's Lois Lane
I fly, carrying her
over my city
keeping a watchful eye

sometimes i'm the villain
a reversal of roles
keeps me in REM
deep sleep adventures never-ending
if there's a Batman, I'll be Bane

In the lands crafted by sleep
I am always on an adventure

Oh no. He's here - God

RE: Poets' Corner
Bukowski

There is a place in the heart that
will never be filled

a space

and even during the
best moments
and
the greatest times
times

we will know it

we will know it
more than
ever

there is a place in the heart that
will never be filled
and

we will wait
and
wait

in that space.
