Haha. He's still doing a good PR job. I think it is kinda positive even so. Someone who's pretending to be nice is a sight better than someone who's outright nasty - like the previous dickhead. I don't trust him and don't like him, but at least even if he's putting condescending tones over it he's saying "be nice to gay people" and not "throw rocks at them" - maybe some of the congregation will actually change into slightly nicer people, who knows.

See, be glad you all are atheists right now. My Facebook wall is EXPLODING with angry holier-than-thou posts condemning the "evil liberal Socialist Francis", to quote one friend. Or to quote another, "It's no wonder Francis is having Sanders, for whom abortion is a Sacrament, come to the Vatican to discuss money."

Need to think of a witty signature.

Remind them that Franics is still head of the world's largest army of child rapists. You know, if they're worried about the Pope being too liberal.

Bunch of stupid fucking wankers... Dodgy

Wait, that presupposes gays can marry in the Catholic Church Huh

Anyway I think you have to commit gay adultery with a 12 year old.

It's a sin right up till you add the 12 year old, than you get church protection.

I find this hilarious. It brings me so much pleasure knowing that the RCC might once again splinter even further because the faithful don’t like everything that comes from the infallible figure head. Laugh out load

Sadly there have definitely been cover ups (and still are). It's interesting though, that the Church is the only religious group that gets it for the sex abuse when it's really prevalent in Protestant churches as well. However, that centralized hierarchy makes it all the worse, because it allows for cover ups, pay offs, etc. and gives a visual of uniformity that 40,000+ other denominations don't really have when dealing with the same horrifying crimes.

There have been efforts to clear it up at least some. Like while Benedict is accused of covering stuff up while working for the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, once he became Pope, he defrocked 400 priests almost immediately and started tasking the various national Bishops' groups with designing and implementing new protective measures. A study by John Jay College of Criminal Justice has shown that kids are safer now, on the whole. Though I find it a bit ironic most of the abuse was being done (and at times still is being done) by clergy, but one of the new safeguarding measures is to make volunteers take classes on being safe around children.

Right now, unfortunately, an Order I know at least one new member of, is being accused of covering up sexual abuse in Pennsylvania. When I saw the allegations, my mind jumped immediately to (it turns out the correct priest) the guy who always made my skin crawl.

Maybe? This guy already belongs to the FSSP, which is part of a "Traditionalist" movement in the Church; he quite literally believes that he is more Catholic than the Pope and starts throwing around document names in Latin to prove why "Francis and Socialism are incompatible with the Church's teachings". Tongue

A friend once said, of the same person, "religion shouldn't take hundreds of thousands of dollars of education to properly understand; he's just a modern day Pharisee". Though I can't help but think of a phrase repeated on the podcast more than once, and I may be off on the wording here: If you really want to keep people out of Hell, why make it so damn complicated?

Complexity is job security for priests as well as financial advisors. Undecided

I'd never trust as truthful anything a senile old homosexual bloke who wears a dress in public says. And just as his predecessors were, he's simply an arrogant, ignorant, sanctimonious arsehole.

I'm a creationist... I believe that man created God.

Random thought while grading Intro to Crim. tests, Pope Francis is best Troll Pope. Given his position is we're all "imperfect Catholics", his statement is truly troll worthy to those who believe in their own holiness.

Best. Line. Ever. Even if it is sad. Hope you don't take offense, but reminds me of a priest I once met at a Retreat. In theory it was one of those "hey let's all go to Confession, do Bible study, walk some labyrinths" things, but the priest running it found out that both he and I were writing dissertations at the time, so we spent a ton of time whining about them. At one point we shifted to talking about work in general and that's where that line reminds me of what he said, "I've had to take like 90 hours of philosophy classes, been trained to debate about the complex statements of great philosophers who opposed the Church. But the modern kids don't give a shit if Voltaire was witty and anti-clerical and made some decent arguments, they just throw Lady Gaga in your face. The Church doesn't train you to deal with Lady Gaga."
