Posing with Jesus Statue
I could see bad taste maybe, or dumb teen seeking some attention, but jail time?

RE: Posing with Jesus Statue
The church that owns the statue didn't ask police to press charges against the teen, so why did the police do it?

They seem to ask domestic violence victims if they want to press charges and follow their answer, wtf?

Also, hopefully this kid learned his lessons
- leave other peoples stuff alone
- don't post your stupid antics on social media

A decent attorney will get the charges dismissed, and his parents will have to pay, but that's what happens when your kid is a punk.

Well, it very obviously was not a selfie. He is covering for someone else.

Disgusting!

Taking the blame for another's sin? I hope they crucify him for that!

The problem is with the law:
"Desecration” is defined in Pennsyvlania as ““Defacing, damaging, polluting or otherwise, physically mistreating in a way that the actor knows will outrage the sensibilities of persons likely to observe or discover the action.”

If that is in fact the law, then it can be struck down on a First Amendment basis.

If they can't take a joke, fuck 'em.

Definitely a first amendment case. They would not want me on the jury.

Will he get a decent attorney or will he get a pro-Bono public defender that doesn't want to offend the local judge? My experience with PDs is that they just go through the motions.

A decent judge would throw it out at arraignment and not let it go to trial.

I'd like to know if the ACLU or American Atheists are aware of this situation. This is really upsetting.

Yeah, well... that's gonna backfire / blow up in their faces (depending on your POV), given the backlash they're facing.

Two years because its "venerated?" How completely absurd.

Who ever is pressing these charges should feel ashamed of themselves. If I lived in that town and heard that kid actually got sent to jail for those two years. I would walk up to that statue and turn it into rubble with a heavy sledge hammer and set it on fire.
