Nobody deserves to be raped. Or hit. Or any other form of physical harm. Period.

Yeah, I know. It just pisses me off that he throws that word around and wishes it on other people when he has no idea what it actually means to the victim.

RE: Preacher hit in head with baseball bat
I read part way into this, so whomever had whatever opinion has his/hers. Mine- One does not have a right to inflict a serious and possibly fatal injury on a person, just because one does not agree with said person. The minimum from a strike from a baseball bat could be a concussion. I dropped an automobile driveshaft on my head during removal almost 2 years ago, and it took a year before I was feeling "right". I had memory loss and confusion, plus headaches. The very least a fellow human on this planet deserves is to not have a fellow human threaten their lives with a physical and potentially fatal attack, just because they said something one didn't like or agree with. This isn't the middle east, ffs. And it shouldn't be happening there, either.

Do you take the Devil as your example? Letting someone else establish your own moral standards is allowing them to control you, in a very real sense.

Sure, the guy's an asshole. How does that justify physically assaulting him? If that's the reasoning, pack a meal, you'll be a while taking care of all the assholes in the world.

To stand in a public place and blatantly broadcast racist and homophobic opinions through a loud-hailer would in all likelihood in Australia result in a police arrest on the grounds of vilification, disturbing the peace, or inciting violence. I can't believe that nobody—especially one of the waiting parents—didn't call 999, considering he was ranting for such a lengthy period. Or is that sort of public behaviour acceptable in America?

He was lucky someone didn't air-condition his gut with a 9mm.

Not only is that type of behavior legal in the US, the Constitution prohibits legislatures from making it illegal, be they federal, state, or local. Making this illegal would require a Constitutional amendment to allow it to be made illegal, and doing so would require legal surgery right next to the jugular vein of a lot of the protections that allow atheism to exist in this country and prevent Christians from taking it over in entirety.

Any opinion -- and ESPECIALLY religious opinion -- is open for public airing and protected as freedom of speech. There are a few limitations, but I don't think any apply here:

1) Threatening or menacing is often illegal.
2) Inciting to violence is illegal.
3) Sometimes the specific language with which the opinion is expressed is illegal under obscenity laws, though those have mostly been struck down by the courts.
4) Creating a public hazard through speech can be illegal. The typical example is shouting "fire!" in a crowded theater.
5) Outright acts of fraud, filing false reports or documents with authorities, perjury, and so on.
6) Municipalities can put legislation in place regarding disturbing the peace (ie, no loud screaming during sleeping hours) or the use of amplifiers voice (such as with bullhorns)
7) Access to various locations and events may be restricted. You might have no right to physically be there, or you might be allowed there only under a presumption of civil conduct. This is why "protestors" keep getting escorted out of Target stores and why priests can't come on to public school campuses to proselytize.

As for him getting ventilated with a 9mm? As a general proposition in America, the people most enthusiastic about gun ownership and the people most vocally eager to employ their guns on the social and political front are on the same side of the culture wars as the hate-douches.

We'll take your number 2 there. Inciting to violence is what he did and what he got!

It was a joke, BAP. That's the excuse rape apologists (including this asshole) give for why women "deserve" it. So he replied with "was he wearing something provocative". Paleo got my joke about how ironic it is that this guy was attacked, after advocating for the violence against women based on their actions/choices, when in fact neither is justified. He was just playing off the irony.

Pretty funny. And, at the same time, deeply sad.

I understood someone say the funny part of it, but I didn't.
I am basically a pacifist, but 30 years ago I paid someone who beat up the guy who ripped the slacks off my daughter in his car and she escaped into the street, ran and knocked on a door at 2:00 AM with only a long shirt on, and called me. She knew where to find the guy, so I paid to have him hurt. I feel he had it coming. This guy too.

RE: Preacher hit in head with baseball bat
Going against the grain here, I kind of do feel sorry for him. Yes, he's an asshole, but he's brainwashed. He likely doesn't know how to think for himself or is too afraid to think for himself in the first place, because of the threat of Hell. That may make him a coward, and you can call him all the things you want, but when it comes down to it, these kinds of people have serious problems that are not adequately addressed by society.
