Protesters in Paraguay set Congress on Fire During Demonstration
While the rest of the world awaits with bated breath for news of what sample of batshittery US politics will excrete next, Paraguay decided to remind us that the world is not solely the US and Russia.

And to that end, the people have set their Congress building on fire.

Protesting in response to a 'secret' bill passed in a closed room in the Congressional building rather than on the Senate floor which amended the country's constitution to allow current President Horacio Cortes to run for office again, hundreds allegedly gathered to join in. The protesters claimed the bill has paved the way for dictators, apparently unaware that it is supposed to be the dictator that burns down the national government meeting place, not protesters.

The president has gone to twitter asking for calm, and the government has claimed their bill was completely legal, and also asked that we stop asking about the rancor pit they've installed under the Senate.

The people closely associated with the namesake of female canines are suffering from a nondescript form of lunacy.

Am so tired right now, I read the title as "Poltergeists in Paraguay Set Congress on Fire". Drinking Beverage

When trying to decide which country in South America to inflict my presence on, Paraguay was the one I struck out instantly - terribly religious, bigoted and homophobic, from what I read. Also, more than one person here (Brazil) has been rather negative about it, too.

Yeah, I didn't contribute much to... well, anything, really. Story of my life Confused

Which was started by a Bulgarian, btw.Or they were - falsely - accused of it? Don't remember, don't care, to be fair

The Fire was allegedly started by a dutch communist, and masterminded by three Bulgarian Comintern agents, but some historians believe that Hitler ordered the fire as a means to gain emergency powers to destroy the German communists political capabilities (which he did).

Yeah, one of them was a "hero" (and a freaking alcoholic, among other things) and our first communist president. His mummy (and my this I don't mean his momma Dodgy ) was kept in a mausoleum which was subsequently blown to smithereens (though it wouldn't go willingly. The mausoleum, that is, not the mummy - took three attempts before they managed to demolish it). Ah, good times, good times Drinking Beverage

Don't worry FT, I got it. *gently pet FT on the head*
The tactic though is right out of the Dictators play book. Causing an incident, or using an incident, in order to justify gaining more control.

Regarding the protesting. Fucking aye, now that's how you fucking protest!
Good on them.
