There were these two men in the corner talking extremely loudly about some very violent subjects. One of the receptionists had asked him a couple times if they could bring their voices down, which they would for about...a minute, and then return to being loud.

The last time (3rd time) she went over there to ask one of the gentleman starts getting really rude and pissy and one of the first things out of his mouth was "its because I'm mexican isnt it"

I couldnt believe it. So fucking rude. The receptionist started crying she was so horrified he'd pull that.

I felt so bad for her. He clearly just pulled that out of his ass to upset her. I hate people like that.

Was she white? If so, she should say this next time:

"No, it's because I'm white so I'm sensitive to bullshit."

And why is it pushing it? It was my bosses business, why should his business suffer by hiring Indians when he could prevent that by hiring white people.

So if they are equally qualified, how would his business suffer? They have bad manners? Higher ones that are experienced. They are hard to understand? You have to be shitting me if you tell me there has never once been a sufficient English-speaking Indian applicant.

Well if you read my posts you'd know the answer to that wouldn't you...
I'll lay it out simple.
People came to us because my boss/manager didn't hire Indians.
People didn't want to be served by Indians because of one or more of the following:
- Hard to understand. Plus it's a horrible accent.
- Not.. 'native' to NZ
- They just don't like Indians
- They want to support local business
- They just don't like Indians
- They don't want arm hair in their ice creams
- They don't want to leave the gas station with a craving for curry

Like it or not society has opinions on things. One of those things is ethnicity.
Given a choice between a Indian and white guy, Kiwi's are gonna choose the white guy... It doesn't matter if the Indian has a phd. Customers don't care about how qualified someone is for the job, because when they go in to buy shit or whatever they assume that the person behind the counter knows what they are talking about. ie: Z (the opposition gas station) will pump your gas, where I worked we will also pump your gas.. The end result is the exact same so other factors such as ethnicity make up the factors in deciding what gas station to go too.

You need to be competitive and so if things like ethnicity help customers decided whether to stop in at your gas station or continue 500m down the road to Z, then you need to consider those factors or you will lose potential business.

It's not restricted to white people.
Take the Indian restaurant I worked at for example.
EXACT OPPOSITE situation. My boss there only recruited Indians.
The only reason he recruited me (a white guy) is because he needed someone with a motorbike license on short notice.
It was the exact same situation, but in complete reverse.

When people go to an Indian restaurant, they wanna see an Indian cooking Indian food...

Don't give me shit. If anything I would be more likely to hire an Asian over a white person (unless I was shooting a porno or needed a driver). Stereotypes can work in your favor.ThumbsupBig Grin

I like that I said I would give you preferential treatment on everything except two jobs that stereotypes say you can't do well....and then you bothered to try and tell me why I should give you at least fair treatment in those two exceptions as well Laugh out loadLaugh out loadLaugh out load

Calling bullshit on your boss.

You kept tabs on every minority that was interviewed? None of them spoke any good English?

(22-07-2013 10:26 PM)earmuffs Wrote:  - Not.. 'native' to NZ

So you are telling me that the majority of New Zealanders are racist?

(22-07-2013 10:26 PM)earmuffs Wrote:  - They just don't like Indians

Same as above.

(22-07-2013 10:26 PM)earmuffs Wrote:  - They want to support local business

They'd be supporting local business regardless.
