I went to a Protestant Seminary so there the emphasis is on how to have an affair with the Church Organist and run off with all the Tithes and Offering.

I don't get it. Even if there was some hidden message, it can't actually do anything. It's not magic.

Maybe this is why I could read the entire harry potter series without it keeping me up at night.

Also Zep rocks.

Start at minute 9:25ish for Backmasking exposed by Michael Shermer. Big Grin

RE: Question for the Preachers...Calling on Erxomai
"There's power in Satan,
One who's path, that makes me sad,
There's power in Satan"

THATS the supposed wicked lines in Stairway to Heaven. Crazy i can still remember that shit today.
As if SOMEONE, ANYONE will here such thing subliminally and drop what they are doing and convert to the other team.

In many ways the southern baptist in the 1980's seemed a lot like those frightened sleep over buddies doing the "Bloody Mary" chant in the bathroom Whit the lights out. Just fear of the boogie man.

In "Another One bites the dust" it supposedly said "Decide, To smoke marijuana" over and over.

They'd TELL you what it says...then play it. Amazing how everyone in the room heard the same thing! Christians horning in on Penn and Teller's slight of hand tricks, i tell ya!

Lol...very good analogy.

You forgot about one other major Baptist fear:

A Fundamentalist Baptist Minister in Alabama, sorely tempted,
finally propositioned the Choir director one night after practice,
when they were alone in the Church.
"Where should we do it, Reverend?" she enthusiastically replied.
"Right here on the floor!" he panted.
"It'd be too cold." she whispered. "How about standing up?"
"Good Lord, girl! Have you taken leave of you senses?" he shouted.
"If anyone came in, they'd think we were dancing!"

Ahh, the fear and sin of dancing! How far the insanity went!

I went to a Southern Baptist School (Briarcrest) and it was QUITE expensive, as i am now told.
I had a good pal (girl) get expelled from there. She was out with her boyfriend at the Drive In Theater one fateful Saturday night. They were making out. No big deal. But some of her girlfriends were also at the drive in and on Monday told some friends who told more friends, then a teacher over heard.....and by the end of the day, my Pal...who was doing what teens do...was KICKED out of that school! "YOU, represent Briarcrest every where you go" she was told. NO warning, no suspension...TOTAL expulsion.
Obviously displaying how the OT god would have handled this situation.

I know ole Seth claims he's in the buckle of the bible belt, but here in memphis...we hosted..for 20+ years the Southern Baptist Convention due to Bellevue's preacher being the "HEAD" of that convention. There are more churches here than gas stations. Not only did we get the Southern Baptist Convention, we also got the main convention of the COGIC. Memphis has it BAD here with religious insanity.
Our Religious nuts made the poorest county in the WHOLE united states the richest county in the state of Mississippi by voting AGAINST casinos. Yep! God hates Casinos (as much as fags) and so the poor ass cotton fields of North Mississippi is now the New Vegas. Even funnier, is some of the Christian Rock bands i have produced thru the years that were VOCAL opponents about the casinos...well, they are in cover bands at the casinos now...eeking out a living. Ahh the Hypocrisy!

I just don't understand how incidents like this don't pile up and make the religion either go away or become a much more benign virus - I bet that's one extra atheist they made that day at least.

RE: Question for the Preachers...Calling on Erxomai
I'll offer my own 2 cents on this. For those who didn't read my early posts, I have studied for 10 years to become an Eastern Orthodox priest (something very close to Catholicism, sharing more than 90% of the dogma). I went through 5 years of seminary and 4 years of university level Theology.

In my early days I remember how weird the dogma sounded to me:

"How many Gods do we have?"
Me: One. I mean god the... father...?
"No, no, you have it wrong. It's the father AND the son AND the holy ghost"
Me: (suspicious look) Three gods?
"No no no, one god, but 3 persons"
Me: So one god acting and playing around as 3 characters?
"No no, it's like 3 real personalities but in a single being"
Me: ... (This guy doesn't know what he's talking about. I need to ask some other people)

Of course, when I went to the seminary, one of the first things they told us was that we should feel free to ask any questions and by god, that's what I was determined to do. I did it too... for like one week. During that week I understood it completely. The slightly annoyed look in the eyes of the priest who was supposed to answer and the scorning sounds of my classmates taught me that questions are wrong. The fact that I even have such questions means that I lack faith and/or knowledge and that is my fault. God's logic is superior and unless I submit my limited mind to god's greatness I'm not only not worthy to be a priest, but I'm a failed human being. These doubts come from the devil and I don't want to do the devil's deeds do I? My mind and soul are under attack and I am supposed to resist, not indulge in such thoughts.

Before long, I was making scorning sounds too and I answered probing questions with the same slightly annoyed and disapproving tone. Good boy! EVERYTHING you don't understand can be explained in a few simple steps: mistranslations, wrong context, this life doesn't matter, god's plan is beyond our understanding. God is always right. If it seems to you like something is wrong, it means that you are wrong and you need to stop that line of thought immediately because the devil is controlling your mind or otherwise you would certainly understand. Please feel free to ask any questions.

The conditioning was so powerful that breaking away from it nearly wrecked my mental health.

Oh, no Hallucinations 4:11 says the 'gilded sheep should be stewed in rat blood' but Morons 5:16 contradicts it. (Chas)

I would never shake a baby unless the recipe requires it.

Yes, Yes and Yes! Different Denominations totally (our shared pasts) but IDENTICAL methods of Indoctrination.

Gods logic above ours (also morals..aka KC) what ever THAT means. If he cant at least DEAL with his creations on their own 'dumbed down' logic/morals...then what good is he as a god?

The way the religious leaders turn your logic ON you. If you are doubting, its the devil in your brain messing you up! "BOO!"

When you have a book that TELLS you to "lean NOT on your own understanding" its a recipe for Mind Control, plain and simple.

Thanks for sharing your experience.

For ALL the reasons you list...is what started eroding my faith in the fairy tale.

You three are fucking awesome.
