Question for theists in the forum
I sometimes venture over to a site, Theologyonline.com, which is obviously dominated with theists with a spattering of atheists stirring the pot and throwing the BS flag when called for.

I notice, by some theists, a profound hatred for those that don't buy into their religious views. A few of these seem to be filled with a apoplectic glee in their certainty atheists will burn in hell - like they want to escort them and light the match.

Just curious if you have, or can provide any insights to the mindset of people like this. I mean, I understand, doctrinally and all that by definition we are all hellhound for rejecting jeebus and the holy ghost and all that - so most of you buy into that idea, but why do some revel in it? I picture these WBC types as the ones camping out for days and nights to be first in line for a good old fashioned stoning in Tehran...

Maybe the ones that harbor doubts are the gleeful ones.
Maybe the glee is proportional to the doubt.

Skepticism is not a position; it is an approach to claims.
Science is not a subject, but a method.

I have no insight into the mind of sadistic fundies except to say that this attitude is nothing new in Christianity. Here's a quote from the 3rd-century Church Father, Tertullian:

Quote:The greatest joy of Heaven is in watching the torments of the damned in Hell--a spectacle far more pleasing than any upon Earth.' [De Spectaculis]

This site (a Christian one, it seems) has a nice collection of sadistic quotes from Christians throughout the ages about the joys of watching the damned in hell from a safe perch in heaven.

Religious disputes are like arguments in a madhouse over which inmate really is Napoleon.

Heh, shouldn't the title be "Question for Spectre and kingschosen"?

Anyway, this sort of thing happens a lot. People who are raised in the church are often indoctrinated and have no real idea what it means to be like Christ. Empathy and compassion is often lost; especially on nonbelievers. These people are so concerned with conversion that they will either berate people into following them or shun them as heathens.

Their actions become so self serving that most believe that God needs them to turn others to Christ and they don't realize their actions aren't needed by God; that they have nothing to do with another person's salvation - that is between that person and God.

Just put yourself in their shoes... you feel so certain that there's a God, and yet life doesn't quite work the way it's supposed to work. You can be both atheist and successful, and you can be both religious and unlucky. It's clear, from direct observation, that "God's justice" isn't being meted out in this life.

The atheists don't tithe, they don't waste their time with prayer or bible study (well, most don't) and they don't have to hold onto faith in the face of evidence against it... and yet for all this extra effort you're putting in, you're not getting rewarded for it here. Wouldn't this idea of the atheists going to Hell make life much more livable? Wouldn't this idea of justice after death make you happy about what you've given up for your religion?

My girlfriend is mad at me. Perhaps I shouldn't have tried cooking a stick in her non-stick pan.

Oh god... I'm so scared...

Anywho, It's funny that non-theists can rack up a lot of bad publicity by seeking proof and pounding on theist's dogma, making waste of their myths... but we don't have any hell to send them to. They threaten hell and all we have are facts?

Damn, it's dismal sometimes being a non-theist! I need a hell to send theists to so I can feel more assurance in my non-belief. Hmm... maybe I can think one up...

Now I feel better!

Yeah... I like to really look close, Hieronymus Bosch had an incredible imagination! The close up details are the best.
