Questions for atheists
(22-09-2013 12:34 PM)Megan Wrote:  Hi everybody! I am new here... I joined because I would really love some answers from you. I am writing a paper on worldviews and I have 8 questions to ask...I would really appreciate it if one of you could take the time to answer these!

1) what is prime reality? (the thing from which everything else comes)
Example: God
I don't believe there is such a thing as prime reality.
2) what is the nature of external reality?
Example: external reality is the universe which God created out of nothing.
The universe exists objectively. It existed before I was born, and will continue after I die.
3) what is a human being?
An animal that has evolved to the point of having reason.
4) what happens at death?
Life function ceases, therefore so does existence.
5) why is it possible to know anything at all?
Because we have reason.
6) how do we know what is right and what is wrong?
We decide what is right and wrong based upon an end we seek for ourselves.
7) what is the meaning of human history?
Example: history is a meaningful sequence of events that lead to God's will.
There is no objective meaning of human history, any meaning is something we have imposed.
8) what person, life orienting core commitments are consistent with your worldview?
Ayn Rand and objectivism.

Good luck with your paper.

Thank you SO much to anyone who takes the time to answer these questions!

1) what is prime reality? (the thing from which everything else comes)
Example: God
When we discover self. No diety necessary
2) what is the nature of external reality?
Perception. No diety necessay
Example: external reality is the universe which God created out of nothing.
3) what is a human being?
A species on this planet
4) what happens at death?
Not a medical person and cannot give details other than the specie stops functioning.
5) why is it possible to know anything at all?
Only perceptional
6) how do we know what is right and what is wrong?
Social environment
7) what is the meaning of human history?
Development of the species
Example: history is a meaningful sequence of events that lead to God's will.
Not a good sequence or example.
8) what person, life orienting core commitments are consistent with your worldview?
No one person or thing – only searching/researching for the real truth/s. Singular and perceptional.

We as humans live in our own private worlds and interact with whatever social or environmental circumstances we encounter. Therefore, most of your questions can be answered with “self perception”. Question 4 can be answered by stating that the specie stopped functioning [I cannot offer medical expertise here]. As individuals we function from the inside out and the social environment in which we are brought up in encompasses our earliest views. Self experience/s will ultimately alter early learning and keep changing as our lives progress, as nothing is static. You need no outside deity to reflect on the singular self, the self can only understand itself through its own perception of who or what it is.

RE: Questions for atheists
1) what is prime reality? (the thing from which everything else comes)
Everything that currently exists, has always existed in one form or another. Matter cannot be created or destroyed. (Multiverse Theory)

2) what is the nature of external reality?
Reality is the physical plain. Everything we know behaves according to the laws of physics. Like gravity and stuff. (I am not a physicist.)

3) what is a human being?
A being capable of ration and critical thought. Not every human being utilizes these attributes however.

4) what happens at death?
Do you remember what it was like before you were born?

5) why is it possible to know anything at all?
Because we have brains and are alive. Or are we alive?

6) how do we know what is right and what is wrong?
Fellow philosophers have been pondering this question for many many generations. The answers seems to vary.

7) what is the meaning of human history?
Well, we live within linear "time" so we can't really escape creating history.

8) what person, life orienting core commitments are consistent with your worldview?
None, my worldview constantly changes and it sometimes troubles me, sometimes makes me think, and sometimes comforts me.
