I read about that he died.

But as if to knock me down, reality came around
And without so much as a mere touch, cut me into little pieces

An amazing statesman.

Need to think of a witty signature.

Light and shadow. At the end of his political career he was involved in a major party donations scandal. So much so that even his own party dropped him in the end. He also didn't seem to be a great family man, which was one of the tickets he used to run on. His sons have severed all contacts after their mother commited suicide.

But yes, he was one of the better German politicians. Along with his immediate predecessor Helmut Schmidt, who was the embodiment of elder statesman.

I have fond memories of him through the 80s and 90s. A towering statesman. Sad to hear he died.

His major merit wasn't that the Berlin wall fell. That would have happened with or without him. It was that he managed to reunite the countries within a year against the resistance of Thatcher and Mitterand. But even there it's light and shadows. In full knowledge of the upcoming financial and social cuts, the economic difficulties, he promised the citizens of the former GDR blooming landscapes and that they would be much better off in a united Germany.
