Smelled like strep to me. I took him to his pediatrician - negative rapid strep. On Friday around noon they called and said the culture was negative. So he didn't get any antibiotics. I kept him home Thursday and Friday.

Friday afternoon - he starts breaking out in a rash, beginning with his ears, spreading down his neck. Still running moderately high fevers. Saturday morning I took him to urgent care. His rash was head to toe and worsening before my eyes. They ran a strep test - negative. Took a CBC (bloodwork) that showed neutrophils were elevated. Negative for mono. They decided to go ahead and treat him for strep - he's allergic to penicillin. So he got a rocephin shot (I almost cried with him) and a prescription for azithromycin. Last night the diarrhea started. He woke me up an hour ago (it's now - little after 2 am here). Then he starts crying because he thinks he going to vomit. Fortunately I have zofran ODT on hand.

And now my neck hurts - my lymph nodes are swelling. My throat is sore. My body aches. I'm still not healed from surgery. My insurance sucks and I now owe even more. Why the fuck do I have insurance if they're not going to fucking pay for anything?! And at my own fucking hospital, at that.Angry I'd probably end up having to declare fucking bankruptcy by the end of the year if I had rent. That or lose my home. They'll get my money when I have it to give. Bastards.

tl;dr Scarlet fever sucks ass. Now I'm coming down with strep. And my insurance company can go fuck itself with a cactus covered in habaƱero hot sauce.

Hope you both feel better real soon.

Dealing with insurance and crap sucks as bad as being sick...if not more sometimes. Like any of us need that additional stress when we don't feel well.

My gripe on the American medical system/insurance....

Woke up Friday with a little bit of a backache...but, whatever. Not that bad, rub some dirt on it and keep going. Around noon the spasms started. Oh crap, kidney stones? Let's see what happens. Keeps happening for about an hour so I decide to do what I had been advised to do several months ago.

In February I ended up in the ER with a kidney stone. (As it turns out it's the same one that put me in the ER last July.) They suggest I go for a follow up with a urologist to form a relationship so that my only option isn't the ER. So I called and it was five weeks before I get in. Of course by then the stone was gone.

Anyway, I called the urologist's office Friday about 1 pm figuring I am not going to get in to see him but maybe he can prescribe something and advise me as about taking some of the other med I have on hand from last time.

Call....hold...hold...hold...hold...hold some more....
Me: Explain situation
Them: I can get you in on Monday.
Me: Blink I will end up in the ER before that.
Them: Sorry.
Me: The reason they had me come see the doc in March was so I wouldn't have to do that in the future.
Them: Go see your regular doc.
Me: She will send me to the ER.
Them: I will send a message to his nurse, Karen. She's at lunch but she'll call you back.
Me: Yeah, do that.

Clock ticking....2:00...okay she's supposed to be back from lunch now.
2:30...maybe she will have had time to check her messages.
3:00...well they did say the doc was booked this afternoon, the nurse is busy
3:30...well it's Friday, I hope they don't close early
4:00..ready to bite on a stick in so much pain...can't urinate...definitely kidney stone...fml
4:10...call back, spend 20 minutes on the phone with the same person...they can get me in to see the doctor on SEPTEMBER the 2nd! WTAF!!!! Where did the Monday appointment go? Censored
Them: Let me see if someone else can help you. Hold...hold...hold...sorry, all the administrators are gone for the day.
Me: Please send the nurse another message.
Them: I will send a message to Gloria...see above...Karen? Gloria?
4:30 Hang up ready to cry.
4:35 Nurse Gloria calls. Apologizes profusely...they sent the message to the wrong nurse, with the wrong doctor, in the wrong office. Weeping
She says she will talk to doc about prescribing something and also about taking the other med. After describing the symptoms she says if she had gotten the message she would have gotten me in to see the doctor that day. Facepalm
4:45 Nurse calls back, yes, take meds on hand and she is calling in the strongest thing they can give for pain without having seen me...Tylenol 3. M&Ms are nearly as effective for the treatment of a kidney stone on the move...but it's something.
She says to come in at 1:00 Monday for an X-ray and to see the doctor.

Why the hell does everything have to be so difficult?

It's been a long couple of days. Weeping

Oh dude you've got to be kidding me the number of rednecks and others either extolling the virtues of American healthcare and moaning about Obamas limited Medicaid reforms is legerdemain and massive.

Oh no...it just gets worse and worse. Insurance is expensive and covers less and less every year. Co-pays go up every year.

Now that doctors are too freaked out to prescribe anything for pain your only option is to get into a pain management clinic for chronic pain or go to the ER for specific pain like kidney stones. And then you have to have an X-ray, A CT scan, or an ultrasound or some combination of two or more of those very expensive tests.

I am thankful that insurance was much better back when I was dealing with cancer. We had zero deductible at that time. Ours is still a whole lot lower than that of many people.

It's so frustrating. We have some of the best trained and knowledgeable medical people anywhere but they are often caught up so much in paperwork, drug laws, and insurance crap that they can't actually focus on their patients. And everything is becoming specialty now. I used to be able to see my regular doc for almost everything...now almost every visit ends up with me being sent to some specialist so I can pay another doctor and pay for more and more tests.

Medicine here is a business. And by circling people around to various specialists what was once a simple trip to the doctor cost a small copay and then for meds is now a multiple doctor adventure with multiple tests and multiple payments.

For some reason my doctor used to be able to treat me for a sinus infection. She apparently lost that skill and will send me to a specialist...after paying her to do nothing but send me and my wallet to another doctor. Angry
