A good storyline (immigrants, evil press, etc) makes them overlook everything else.

Because America has a history of marginalizing different groups within society, the one time it does something that benefits those that most need it it's suddenly unAmerican? Is to be "American" to treat vulnerable groups within society like shit?? How is that a good thing??

This is what I don't get with Republicans. And by that I don't mean rich people and politicians, I mean the average Joe, poor-middle income Republican. I do not understand the level of idiocy those people live with. To me, trying to wrap my head around how someone can be so stupid is like trying to describe colour to a blind man.

RE: Ranting corner
Simple answer is generations of brainwashing, America has been anti social health care for fucking ever, I feel really privileged to have a national health service in my country, its not perfect but if you get real sick good care is available and you don't have the anxiety of wondering if your insurance company will quibble or face the horrors of having to sell your hard worked for house in order to pay your medical bills. Any social assistance program is frowned upon because of course it must be socialism or even communist, it all goes back to the communist purges of the late forties and early fifties. I remember my late father (who worked at Bellevue and mount Sinai hospitals in New York for a year in 1959) telling me of the anxiety patients faced.

Yip.
I'm proud of our healthcare system too. If I break an arm or something I can go to the hospital and they'll x-ray it and fix it up and put it in a cast. I will than get follow up appointments until my arm is healed. All of which wont cost me a cent.
I will take sick leave from work OR if it was an accident I will get ACC which is a body of government that will pay my wages for time spent off work. No stress.
I don't need insurance, I don't need to worry about spending thousands of dollars or needing to pay off thousands of dollars. Same if I get cancer or any other disease or get into a car accident etc... Basically anything related to the hospital I get for free. The only time I pay for healthcare is if I need to go to the GP. BUT in saying that, all persons under 18 go to the GP for free. The only other thing is medication. BUT it is heavily subsidized AND our government buys the generic stuff, instead of the exact same product but branded (unlike you Americans which is why you pay a lot more for your pills and have the whole "big pharma" situation), so we get it cheaper to begin with. Also, if you require long term medication you only pay for the first 40 tablets and the rest for the year is free.
So for example, my Dad requires a number of pills. My mum buys the first 40 pills it costs her around $20 (around $15USD), that lasts 40 days, and the rest for the rest of the year are free.

We get all this free healthcare, and it's for anyone and everyone, and we pay very similar taxes to you. BUT we don't have to pay for health insurance.
Socialism for the motherfucking win.

RE: Ranting corner
Brought another watch. Though in my defense it only cost me $1USD, which includes shipping.
So, if I don't like it when it actually gets here I'm gonna chuck it on trademe (our version of ebay) for like $20 or $15 or something, keep the $1.40NZD I paid for it (so I get my money back) and spend the remainder on a bunch more cheap watches and once they arrive, keep or trademe those too. Maybe make some money, even if it is a little bit it's still a tiny tiny side hobby business. And besides, if the watch doesn't sell oh well I'll keep it it only cost me $1USD.

Making a bit of money would be cool though. I'm confident I can sell it on trademe for more than a dollar, all the watches on there are a lot more than a dollar and the average buyers gonna think even $20 is cheap.
I work at a big box retailer of cheap shit and I'm very familiar with watch prices at work, when I work security up stairs I'm standing by the cheap watch stands and when I'm downstairs I'm standing by the expensive watches in the jewelry department and so our cheapest watch is a kids watch for $15 and it's all very plastic-y. The average price of our cheap watches are around $30. If people will pay $30 for the cheap shit we sell at work I'm sure they'll buy the tasteful shit I buy off the internet and ship in from China for $20.

That's a big part of it, but there is also a prevalent attitude in America that you're entitled to what you can pay for, and nothing more. The implication of this is that poor people aren't entitled to anything at all, and as callous as that sounds, that's exactly how many well-off people in America think (I know some of them). As applied to healthcare, it shifts to young healthy people who don't feel they need healthcare being resentful that their tax dollars are paying for healthcare for those who do need it.

The current manifestation of this is Trump proposing that we pour billions of dollars into military spending (already the largest item in the budget, if you don't count the interest on the national debt), and paying for it by emasculating social programs, each of which is only a small portion of the budget. And a large percentage of the American public seems OK with that! They don't seem to mind pouring most of their taxes into the military (by the way, military hardware is obscenely overpriced -- I know this because I used to work for a defense contractor), but they really resent a few pennies going to feed someone who would starve otherwise.
