RE: Ranting corner
Can someone please tell the Dean's assistant to give more detail when sending out invites saying "Meet with Dean - [Shai]"? It makes me panic wondering what I did wrong. According to our secretary though, Dean just wants to meet with each untenured faculty member to see how we're doing and what we can do for progress towards tenure.

Note to self, because I'm headed off to cover a colleague's class, should probably bring: Evals, class lists, publications (complete, reject, in press), examples of work in classes, proof of how I'm trying out different methods of pedagogy, etc.

Need to think of a witty signature.

Yeah, so don't turn this into another gun debate...okay?

There was a shooting a couple towns over the other night. Several dead including the shooter and one in the hospital. Some guy upset over his divorce.

Anyway...on the radio...and I have heard this more than once...the father says he has been estranged from his son (the shooter) for about a year and was unaware of his marital problems. And...............his son is an alcoholic and an atheist.

They are making sure that little clip is repeated as often as possible...he's an alcoholic and an atheist...yup...that explains it. FFS.

See here they are the bruises some were self-inflicted and some showed up along the way. - JF

The idea is to use the comfort blanket of how the son is different to emphasize to the audience that they are safe from doing such things themselves. If the son was gay and had a French boyfriend they'd mention that over and over too. If they emphasized that the son was a normal (as far as anyone could tell) person, then the audience might have to consider that they themselves might be capable of such violence. Instead it's better to imply that it was being an alcoholic atheist that made him susceptible to the temptation to kill people. That's the kind of news people want to hear, not the other kind that leaves them looking at the guys next door and wondering if they're gonna start shooting - they're not alcoholic atheists, so it's safe Smile

RE: Ranting corner
I just covered a class for a colleague; I was told there would be a guest speaker, someone I've worked with a few times before. There was...and I just spent an hour and a half (and soon will again) listening to some of the most horrifying personal stories of sexual violence I have ever heard. Once in a while after listening to presentations and such, I'll joke, not being much for alcohol, that I want a drink; but I honest to God want something to drink after that presentation. Sex crimes are the ones that squick me, and to have a person I know even in passing, talk about the sort of violence and violation she did, was one of those uniquely horrifying experiences that says, "I really could use a few shots of Jameson before going in there next time." This woman is far stronger than I will ever be, to be able to talk about this to a classroom full of students and take questions.

Hmm, somehow I feel like this is less of a warning sign, despite the clip being repeated so many times, than when a guy I worked with was arrested for kiddie porn and his Warhammer40k army was dedicated to Slaanesh, the god of deviant sexual excess and rape. But "alcoholic and an atheist", it's interesting that the news people didn't stop at "he's an alcoholic".

No disrespect to you my friend but I prefer the term child abuse images because that's what they are, porn gives them a subliminal legitimacy they don't deserve.

Why is there such a huge difference in clothes sizing depending on where you buy them from?? I'm in a size 32 waist now, or so I thought.. Put a new pair of 32's on today and looked like I'd been poured into them, tight as a ducks arse they were..

Well they had to clarify it. There are functioning alcoholic theists. They are called Catholic.
