Reading the birth of satan
Has anyone ever read The Birth of Satan: Tracing the Devil's Biblical Roots? Just watched 43 Alley's the evolution of satan. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-gbOnWj6Mw). I am just now starting on The history of the devil (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJQaVKoxd...re=related). Just wanting to get some thoughts on these books/videos. Is the book worth reading, or do the videos cover it all? Do they have their facts straight? Etc...

RE: Reading the birth of satan
The Rolling Stones have documented this:

Please allow me to introduce myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste
I've been around for a long, long year
Stole many a man's soul and faith

And I was 'round when Jesus Christ
Had his moment of doubt and pain
Made damn sure that Pilate
Washed his hands and sealed his fate

Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name
But what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game

The old gods are dead, let's invent some new ones before something really bad happens.

Thanks for these references. Will check them out. The best academic resource I know of, is Elaine Pagel's (Princeton) "The Origins of Satan".
As for the "serpent's" activities in the Garden Myth..we were discussing that in the Good News or Good Advice thread...

(It's not about ingesting apples). Tongue

A good reference is here, (discusses Ancient Near Eastern Myth sytems, and their remarkable similarities). http://www.sacred-texts.com/evil/hod/hod06.htm

The concept of "evil angels" did not originate in the Hebrew texts. It had Babylonian roots, and it predated Genesis by many years, (see Pagels). In the myth in Genesis, the "serpent" tempts Adam, ("the man"), (not a "proper" name), to "eat from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good AND Evil", (ie a temptation to attempt to expierence both ..... NOT to eat an apple), (see my posts about what that means .. 'the encompassing of opposites"). The theme of "choas vs order" ... ie "encompassing opposites" was a favorite mythological theme in the Ancient Near East, (see Mauduk Slays the Dragon of Chaos http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiamat ). The first vid glosses a bit over the polytheistic nature of early Hebrew culture. More details are here :

I do wonder, we have the birth of satan (the anti god) but we do not have the opposite, the birth of god himself - and before someone says we do and he is called Jesus, I mean the old testament god before our times!

The plural of "atheist" is "atheists". People read and talk about Zeus. Of course that means they believe in Zeus. Weeping

RE: Reading the birth of satan
jajaja I found it silly, because many friends of mine that claims themselves 'atheists', have a lot of Satanistic figures, posters and books, also many of them have a lot of blasphemous T-shirts and stuff like that, for my point of view that's not atheist but anti-god philosophy, like if God was the source of their problems, and by saying: i don't believe in God/ there's no God, is the way to show their resentment.

Of course that not applies for all the atheists.
