Or how about any Scandinavian country right now? The problem I have with skeptics of big government is that they view the political authoritative spectrum in a false dichotomy of extremes.

Not in the way I meant. Having a social safety net is not big government. Big Government means it interferes with a citizen's daily life. I am arguing not from the psychotic tea party term but from what it actually means.

I am arguing my points on the OP's respective country's terms and definitions. You must understand that the U.S political spectrum is drastically skewed from the rest of the developed world's.

I am from the US and I live within an hour of DC, yes I understand politics US style. But when someone asks me to enlighten them I go full bore and teach them why the rest of the world thinks we are insane. If it means I have to clarify myself more so be it.

Since I have lived abroad my entire life, I understand full and well what the world's opinions are of the United States.

I find it helps to explain this concept early because I think the US could do with a decent sized shot of socialism. Our GDP is large enough we should have government health care and education (full through university) we should also have mandatory vacations like they do in the civilised world (at least 4 weeks a year) our Minimum wage should be similar to that of Australia's (somewhere in the $17.00/hour range not 7.50)

And I completely agree with you here.

RE: Redeveloping my worldview
Wow. I walked away from my computer for a few hours and this thread is already my longest. By the way, I left my PC to tell my mom that i'm an atheist. Didn't go over well, but that's for a different part of the forum. Anyways, I like all your ideas about abortion, and while I think that it is wrong, I think that it would be more wrong to let the child live, growing up in an environment such as described. I'm not sure that I fully understand minimum wage, as it is 7.50 in the US, yet I make 6.50/hr. How does that work(I work at a movie theater, if that's relevant). I'm not so sure 17.00/hr is a good idea, as employers would then have to cut employees to pay them more.

Thats the lie they tell to stop people from demanding fair pay. It has not once happened in the history of the minimum wage. As for your situation I have no idea unless you can accept tips (that changes the rules and the minimum wage for that is like $2.30/hr) GL with the fallout of coming out people can be rather intolerant of freethought

Not really defending government sanctioned sterilization/abortion but China was/is facing a major overpopulation problem. They really did need to do something and it's not like the majority of folks there have the standard of living necessary to enact tax based incentives, etc...better than, ohh I dunno... invading Taiwan or something like that.
