I guess my reading comprehension skills are just that poor, so you likely will have to work with me here to compensate.

Quote:You asked if motivating horrible actions was unique to religion, and I said that it was common to blind adherence to an ideology.

How about non-horrible, seemingly benevolent actions, are they also common to blind adherence to an ideology?

Sure, why not? However, they are typically tainted by the agenda of the ideology, e.g. Christian missionaries.

Skepticism is not a position; it is an approach to claims.

Good people making bad descisions because of religious teachings, par for the course.

"Leelah Alcorn was 17 when she walked in front of a truck this past weekend. She grew up in a tiny town about 20 miles from Cincinnati, Ohio, and was the oldest of four children.

The world now knows that Leelah had a troubled relationship with her parents, who insisted on sending her to Christian therapists because she was transgender and repeatedly have refused to acknowledge Leelah as a girl.”

"Leelah Alcorn’s mother says she loved her "son" but that they didn't support her being transgender for religious reasons."

Yes, the problem is not a particular ideology, but ideology itself.
Actually, to get even more basic, the problem is men.

I don't disagree, but I think the problem needs to be stated more clearly in order to be dealt with effectively. The problem is in in-group/out-group thinking, uncritical acceptance of ideologically palatable ideas, and uncritical rejection of ideologically unpalatable ideas.

I have children, and my son loves Iron man. I don't like Iron man. He's a force for "good", fighting forces of evil. In reality the evil is in the war itself, not on one side or another. My preferred hero is Astro Boy. The Astro Boy series like X-men is fundamentally about the coming war. The heroic action is always the one that connects people together instead of forcing them apart. The heroic action is to show love and compassion not to break and tear and destroy.

That said there is a case for fighting ideologies that explicitly reject those fundamentals. There is a case for fighting ideologies that reject equality between people. There is a case for fighting fraud and deception.

Give me your argument in the form of a published paper, and then we can start to talk.
