I was born after the Cuba crisis. But Chruschtschow and Kennedy worked hard on avoiding the worst. Both making concessions. Both rational personalities as we know today by the accounts given by Cruschtschow's son.

Also, Able Archer wasn't something that made headlines when it happened in '83. Nobody knew until some years ago. In the fall of '83 there was no indication of there being a crisis. And there really was none if you take away the hyperbole by the hystery channel and other networks reporting on it now. There were spies on both sides telling the real tale of there being no danger of the west attacking the Soviet block.

We ain't all gonna die man that's fanciful, we should relax and deal with the threats that are real.

We are all going to die, and war or not only about 1/8 of us will go peacefully in our sleep. The rest of us would be wise to harden the Censored up in preparation for an inevitable painful, agonizing death, whether it be from radiation poisoning, a heart attack, or getting eaten by a 5 legged mutant beaver Big Grin

The flashpoint will be Taiwan, not Syria.

I'm gonna go with the battle for oil in the Spratley Islands and/or control of the Strait of Malacca as the likely flash-point. Depends on the timeline, of course... China is quickly beefing up their PLA Navy. Within 5-15 years, they might have the naval power and transport capacity to support a major operation against Taiwan. That would be Very Bad™.

Seeing as there are no madmen in China's government, they won't do anything unprovoked. Business is too good and they won't risk an international conflict. The most likely scenario, as far as China is concerned, is to establish themselves as the upcoming super power. militarily as well as economically. They have all the time and opportunity in the world to do so. Even more so with the current US administration flipping long time allies the middle finger. China already stepped up in support of the Paris accord when the US withdrew and negotiated cooperation with the EU on that account. One may never forget that China is a country with an unbroken tradition of almost 3000 years. And they have more than a billion inhabitants. Almost 15 percent of the world's population.

I don't believe there are madmen involved in the slightest. That's why I'm unconvinced they'll do more than rumble at Taiwan.

But greed is another matter, altogether. Despite calling themselves communists, they're really a hyper-capitalist state that is rapidly expanding and industrializing its economy. They need resources badly, which is why they have been reaching out across the globe. It's why they've been building runways and missile platforms around the contested Spratley Islands, as pictured below. At some point, their expansion is going to bring them into conflict with either Japan or India, who also have great demand for these resources. Another likely point of conflict is the narrow Strait of Malacca, through which a significant chunk of seaborne shipping for both China and India (etc.) passes, making it a natural choke point for naval blockades designed to strangle the economy of their competitors.

This is one of the illegal bases they are constructing:
