Russia unveils 'Satan 2'
I think we need to focus on defense technology more than offensive technologies in this day and age. If another country sent nukes flying at us it would do us no good to send ours back at them. Both sides lose.

We need to nullify the offending missiles.

RE: Russia unveils 'Satan 2'
So doesn't this mean the US should invade Russia? Hell, Iraq was invaded and they didn't even announce that they had nuclear weapons. They also didn't have any... but that was a minor detail and definitely not a good enough reason not to fuck their shit up regardless. Russia is practically taunting us, and this passive aggressiveness will not stand, man!

RE: Russia unveils 'Satan 2'
Well, the original idea was that building an ABM defense network would only cause the other side to build more nukes, in order to saturate the defenses. That's why the USSR/Russia and the USA have agreements that are supposed to stop us from building them. Obviously, those have somewhat gone by the wayside, prompting these new methods of defeating the defenses.

In a more rational world, we would work with the Russians to develop an cooperative ABM system that would stop small launches from the emerging nuclear powers of the world, and/or a terrorist group that somehow acquires that capability. Even current "small" nuclear states might go through a coup or terrorist takeover of poorly-guarded sites, putting the major powers in danger. But of course, we don't live in that rational world. Sad

China only has something like 260 warheads, but stand to double that number by 2020, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, while Israel is estimated to have 80, India has around 100, and Pakistan is currently at just over 100, but Pakistan is expected to double that number by 2020, as well.

As the old saying goes, "Stop the world, I want to get off."

"Theology made no provision for evolution. The biblical authors had missed the most important revelation of all! Could it be that they were not really privy to the thoughts of God?" - E. O. Wilson

I'd rather just team up with Russia and take over the world.

It's already the equivalent of shooting a bullet to knock someone else's bullet out of the air on the other side of a playing field. It might just get too hard to do it.

How about ... not having nuclear missiles?

Or, having one single offensive and defensive system run by all developed countries, America, UK, Russia, China and India to stop the few crackpot technologically backwards countries like North Korea?

The problem is that, because of the way technology has evolved regardless of our intent, the attacker has such an overwhelming advantage that the only practical way to defend oneself is to predict what prospective adversaries are going to do before they do it and cripple their ability to do so preemptively.

That ceases to be a realistic option when said alliance becomes too complacent and underfunded to accomplish its stated objectives.

Or too reliant on one of those superpowers to keep it afloat.

Why?

It's meaningless to have such a weapon. It will never be used. Wiping out an area the size of Texas, still leaves the US with second strike capability, most of which is in submarines.

We have to remember that what we observe is not nature herself, but nature exposed to our method of questioning ~ Werner Heisenberg

Well, we all know it is MAD and that no one will win.

But, maybe politicians are mad as well.

Tomorrow is precious, don't ruin it by fouling up today.
