RE: SALT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm old enough to remember when potato crisps weren't salted. The salt came separately in a little blue waxed bag about the size of a postage stamp...

As an Englishman, I can say 100% true. British cooking is the total worst. Any dish from any other country is a thousand times better...that's why we love take away dishes here so much, because it's just much better than our own garbage. Laugh out load

I've not seen Downton so I can't comment, although I presume it's crazy buffet's with massive chicken roasts or something haha.

GENERALLY, British cooking consists of:

"A sunday roast" - cooked chicken, along with veg + various potatoes, Yorkshire puddings and gravy. Can be nice, but generally those that cook it are terrible cooks and it's the worst.

Various obscure "after dinner" puddings - such as Trifle

More obscure dishes, which are various things all thrown in together, which are still around for some reason. - a fair amount of UK dishes involve Meat, Potatoes and some sort of veg, all bunged in together and made into a sort of pie or like "meat cake", as it's some sort of left over tradition of 'get what you have, and put it all together and eat it' sort of thing. I believe "pottage" is one of these dishes, as well as most broths/stews you get here in the UK.

I'd much prefer literally any other food/dish you can imagine.
