Sam Harris is a Buddhist
Sam Harris promotes Dzogchen in his book "Waking Up" and podcasts.

Dzogchen is a Tibetan Buddhist teaching.

OK... and?

There is a lot about Buddhist philosophy that I find interesting, and even appealing, as long as any karma or reincarnation or other supernatural claims are skipped over.

As far as what Sam Harris believes, good for him. There's a lot of his stuff that I really like and some that I don't agree with. The issues are the claims, not who accepts or promotes them.

If that's what it takes to be a Buddhist, so am I. I think about being mindful plenty of times in my days

Dzogchen is not mindfulness.

Is this the first atheist witch-hunt?

Being atheist does not mean you can't be religious. Only religious theists believe that nonsense.

So one can be an atheist and follow Dzogchen?

Yes.

One can follow dozens of religious ideas and spiritual ideas. That doesn't mean they "believe" in a deity or believe the results of that spiritual idea EXACTLY the same way those religious practitioners do. They may see there is a practical effect to the ideas behind it.

Do you disagree or have a thought out response to why that wouldn't be the case?

Why should I care what he follows? I've got a flashlight and two good legs ... I'll find my own way.
