The political composition of the current senate make a compromise candidate for the empty SCOTUS seat pretty certain.

There are 54 Republicans, 44 Democrats, and 2 Independents.

Yes. And he'd make a good one but...
not sure he wouldn't be bored as a judge. He has argued before SCOTUS and he might be better suited to do that. But I would love to see him on the bench.

I thought judges had to know loadsa stuff about laws and whatnot? And how to write dissenting opinions and how to interpret stuff and legal principles. Seems a bit odd that any Joe Bloggs can be nominated for the supreme court?

They have to get OKed by the Senate. The role of the Senate is to provide "advice and consent".
