Science/Space photo and picture thread
I came across a picture and a photo today that I thought were mega cool, so I wanted to start a thread in case there are more in the future, so I/we don't have to start new threads every time.

And this little gem comes from this here. The caption is "Light Echo Illuminates Dust Around Supergiant Star V838 Monocerotis Echo Illuminates Dust Around Supergiant Star V838 Monocerotis" How cool is that?

(I just have to mention this fun fact from the article, "Most recently, the telescope documented the first-ever auroras above Uranus ." Sorry, but the inside joke here made me laugh at this! Big Grin )
Thought I'd add this one, too.

RE: Science/Space photo and picture thread
What's a thread of space photos without a picture of the instrument that takes the majority of the photos we all love?

This is my current desktop wallpaper at work. It's the Carina "Mystic Mountain" Nebula.

One of my all-time favorites, the Helix Nebula 650 light years away. I personally call this one "The Eye of God". He has blue eyes, who knew?

Colliding galaxies... so interesting. Can you imagine the the magnitude of destruction that is caused? The beauty is that this destruction also births new stars. Just an amazing cycle of life in the Universe...

I can do this all day. Just Googling these images all day long!

What's crazy is that while they look to be actually colliding they could still be thousands of light years from the first collision of anything. Or they could have alreay demolished each other and we just haven't seen it yet. Imagine living there and looking through a Hubble seeing that 25000 years ago yours and another galaxy were only 10000 years from colliding. That's freaky.

That one with the ants and the coloured stuff is just incredibly neat.
I really like that.
