Yeah, I heard this yesterday on NPR. I wonder if the technique is mutable to other cancers?

It is not. Sadly.

Hate to rain on the parade, but this is only effective in leukemia, which is already a highly treatable form of cancer (with acute lymphoid leukemia in children having survival rates of ~90% and most elderly people with chronic leukemias actually dying mostly from other causes). It's of little use in solid tumours, and GvHD (graft vs. host disease) is a common and highly dangerous side effect in any procedure in which living immune cells from another person are en masse introduced to the host.

However, the principle of the treatment is used in another area with great results: namely, treating viral, fungal or multiresistant bacterial infections in people with compromised immune systems. According to a hematologist I've talked to, CMV infections used to kill ~90% of patients with aplastic anemia - with this method, it's the other way around, 90% survive. The flipside is, it costs a not-so-small fortune and insurance doesn't routinely cover it.

Research has also shown Running helps slow cancer growth in Mice. If this turns out to also be true in humans it could help people manage their cancer.

It's a positive step forward. That's all that matters. Smile

One in two Australians will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetimes. I guess the statistics are much the same worldwide.

You have been donating to you and yours.
