It was originally intended to give the European zone the same (or at least comparable) purchasing power to the Americans. In that it worked. However without something like the Fed to run it it is a bureaucratic nightmare when quick decisive leadership is required. However if you strip the membership down to only the top markets it lessens the benefits and still leaves the risks.

Indeed. The financial disparities are not substantively greater between Eurozone members than between the richest and poorest American states (or Canadian provinces).

But there's almost no central control over the Euro as a single currency. And that's been problematic.

Giving up all control to a central authority is not exactly an easy sell. It is what they should do if they want to have the system actually work but then nobody has ever accused voters of thinking too much in the long term.

It will be interesting to see the fallout from the Scottish vote, if they indeed do go with independance.

What's the UK going to be called if Scotland gain independence?

The Kingdom Formally Known as the United Kingdom?
The Almost United Kingdom?

Still have England Wales and Northern Ireland so United Kingdom would still apply.

It's nominally headed by a Monarch, granted a powerless one.

Wales and Northern Ireland and England hardly count as a "United Kingdom".
Wales is barely a country and Northern Ireland... well..

It just doesn't work without Scotland.
It was barely holding up without Ireland but with Scotland gone you might as well just call it the Kingdom of England again. The Kingdom of England now with the added bonus of Northern Ireland!

Not to mention that the Union Jack would no longer work considering half of it is the Scottish flag... And a combined flag between the English red and white cross thingy and the Welsh green/white/red dragon thingy would just look weird in modern times next to modern flags.

This could be good for NZ actually... If the Union Jack changes our flag would have to change which could prompt the debate regarding us changing our flag or not which I am very much for (changing our flag).

In case nobody has posted this already, as it seems really apt at the moment.
