Scourged by God.
All religions hold that we are lesser beings in need of scourging, repentance, and prayer in order to reach some glorious state of Higher Being.
The first point to consider here seems to relate to that heavenly state. Just what constitutes the desirability of such? Is it the golden streets of Revelations, or perhaps all those virgins offered to ISIS thugs? Maybe it's the rivers of wine, angelic choirs, or simply the joy of viewing god as posited by some Jewish texts.
Even in Buddhism, viewed as a philosophy not a religion by many, and often seen as atheistic, we are taught that our attachment to materialism is fettering our ultimate destination which is Nirvana. Nirvana is seen as freedom from pleasureHuh and pain.Hardly the best of hopes.

Point 2. This involves the taboo issue of god's rights.
Quite unquestioningly God is held as the ultimate truth and beyond criticism.
Just what Universal criteria does God meet and how is this ascertained?
It is claimed that 'fall's occurred both on earth and in Heaven causing a schism.
Could any such fall be seen as disenchantment or a totally justified anarchy?
Any source of Universal existence cannot be claimed perfect, but simply causal.

Point 3 Scourging or suffering is often mentioned in the Bible. Sacrifice too was common in the Old Testament and animal sacrifice was seen to help alleviate the sin of fallen man. Burning animals delighted the nostrils of Jehovah, that cantankerous old god of the Jews. Later his son (and self) would bleed for the masses he had manufactured. Earleir Jesus had allegedly advised his disciples to drink of his blood (wine) in order to remember him a practice still performed solemnly to this day by the catholic church. An old C/W tune goes...there's power, power, ever changing power in the precious blood of the lamb'
Rather than look to the real needs of humans Christianity, in particular posits a fallen, hopeless and depraved society who must hang their heads shamefully and bow and scrape before some totally unjustified mythological being.

In sum,Western religion posits a highly questionable fall, an all powerful coercive God (seen to be universally perfect and beyond criticism) who ever continues to manufacture man and beast in enormous numbers, seemingly to satisfy some weird fetish, and to whom a great many feel an amazing love and devotion.Consider

RE: Scourged by God.
I think Bob Marley sums it up best

"Most people think great God will come from the sky"
"Take away ev'rything, and make ev'rybody feel high"
"But if you know what life is worth"
"You would look for yours on earth"
"And now you see the light"
"You stand up for your right, yeah!"

Maybe this is off your topic, but when you mentioned heaven this song went through my mind.

“ moral virtue comesabout as a result of habit.” --Aristotle
