Sentinel 1 a to be launched.
Sentinel 1 a is to be launched into the earths orbit today with a Russian sojus rocket from the launch base of the European space agency in French-Guinea. Sentinel 1 a is a satelite equipt with latest surveilance technology to observe and map a constantly changing planet. It`s use is varied from observing enviormental catastrophies such as oilspills, observing melting polar icecaps, creating detailed maps of regions, mapping motion risk factors on the ground aswell as providing oversight in a humanitarian crisis and catastrophies.

The great and unique thing about this project is that it will be available for all. Most of the data collected will be available to the public, and better still, private individuals and buisnesses can rent the satilite and it`s tech. More or less opening one of the first buisnesses in space. The use for this could for example be for an agricultural farming company to observe it`s crops or for mining company to search for resources with the detailed mapping tech on the satelite.

The project is financed by a combination of Italian and French buisnesses.

The future seems to bring the first private buisness in space through "spy satelites for rent".

I wonder how it compares with the USGS Ikonos birds.
