I think you mean the 8 Divines as since the White Gold Concordance Talos is no longer counted among their numbers.

I was just listening to the Atheist Experience episode (I think) 865 that covered the Change of Command ceremony's inclusion of prayer. Apparently it is quite a recent phenomenon to include it. It might be worth a listen.

Give me your argument in the form of a published paper, and then we can start to talk.

has unfortunately been a part of military "tradition" for a long time. At least it has while I have been in, and that is 28 years thus far. I have a dream that some day this BS will go away, but while the military tends to be more socially advanced in some areas then our civilian counterparts, we clutch onto tradition with a death grip.
