I honestly feel the trek is peripheral, it is the essence of of trek, but I felt the message of humanity was more important.

I'm not much of a Star Trek fan. I remember watching most of the first series as a child (my OCD won't allow me to move on to later serieses until I've seen all of the first lot).

But... if, in the distant future, documentaries about Humanism are made, it would be a terrible omission if Gene Roddenberry is not cited as a major influence.
