RE: Should your opinions outside the workplace get you fired?
People have two stances on this:
1. bosses can do no wrong if it's a private business. They can fire you for any reason, whether racism, sexism, or they just don't like your tie.
2. it doesn't matter if they're a pedophile, or have a private website talking about exterminating certain people. What they do in their own time is of no consequence.

I'm sure there are people who agree with either one of those stances. But to be real, if the person is an asshole, just kick them out. But if there's a minor, none assholish, thing about the person that you don't like, then you're in the wrong and just get over it.

I believe once you leave the workplace that your personal life is your own.
BUT, in saying that, there are certain situations where it does matter.

ie: The Speaker of the House is suppose to be neutral and if he/she expressed opinions for one particular party or another than I would expect them to lose their job.
Or judges, if they express a bias for/against a particular person in a court case they reside over, I expect them to be dismissed from that case.
Or if you're a lawyer at a prestigious law firm, your actions can reflect poorly on the firm as a whole.

Things of that nature.

I think if you flip burgers at McDonalds or something, you can do no evil.

If it is known that an individual works for a particular company, and an employee's public opinion reflects badly upon the company, then I see no reason why the company should not reprimand the employee. Especially, when the company's reputation is put on the line due to the employee's public opinion.

I guess I am way too sympathetic to the employers. I say if you own a business, you can fire whoever the hell you want at your own discretion (or at your proxy's discretion). If I owned a business, and I knew some employee..I don't know.. kicked a puppy or something. Then yeah, I'd want to have the right to fire them because I want to be able to choose who is on my payroll.

Only if a business is discriminating against a protected class do I see a reason to interfere with an employer's right to choose who he/she is paying.

I prefer fantasy, but I have to live in reality.

I guess my feeling on the matter is

1. Why are employers monitoring peoples private lives in the first place?

2. I don't care if you leave to eat literal baby back ribs. What does that have to do with being at work on time and putting 110% into your work effort?

I know, and I wrote that they are two different things. Which they are.
