RE: Skepticism: Porn... Addiction?
There is a difference between an addiction and addictive behaviour.

An addiction is, from what I understand, based on chemistry. People become addicted to, say, drugs or alcohol because the introduction of those substances causes chemical changes in the addict's body. Much of this is based on genetics. Source: The Genetic Basis of Addictive Disorders

Addictive behaviour is a self-selected pattern of events that creates a reward, a d the person involved does not have the willpower to avoid that reward, thereby causing social, family and sometimes health stresses. Gambling, for instance, does not involve the ingestion of chemicals but, rather, is a pattern that the addict seeks out based on the (false) promise of financial reward.

Addiction can be treated as a medical problem. Addictive behaviour cannot because it is, fundamentally, a weakness.

Porn is not an addiction, but it can lead to addictive behaviour.

Yes ... as can anything.

Addictions can be more or less pervasive, too. I know someone to whom it simply doesn't occur to stop drinking alcohol once they start. But they have not had this problem with cigarettes, drugs or porn, and in fact, seem impervious to all but alcohol. Even there, they are way more into wine and certain hard liquors and not at all tempted by, say, beer.

I had a friend once whose sole addiction appeared to be to gambling, particularly games of chance. And he had NO idea he was prone to it, until he spontaneously spent all his pocket money on a game of chance at the county fair one day, with almost no memory of doing so.

On the other hand I've known people who seemingly become addicted to anything that is remotely pleasurable.

As far as porn goes, beyond the initial novelty it has always been to my mind a way to disconnected from reality. It is like a caricature of sex, and imagined form of sex with no obstacles and no downsides. Everyone wants sex all the time, no one has any trouble reaching orgasm, no mismatched or conflicting desires, no STDs, no condoms, no unwanted pregnancies, no post-coital guilt or relationship angst. It is like how people imagine life in heaven -- no messy details at all. As such, I can't get excited about it, because it doesn't portray to any useful extent, a reality that could actually come to pass.

So if you were in your room watching porn all day and jacking off and never came out... that'd be addiction, IMO, if the porn was the reason why you were doing that.

But as long as you can keep it under control, I don't see it as unhealthy in the same way as cigarettes are unhealthy. Cigarettes will literally kill you. Porn... not so much.

I like porn myself Smile I don't watch it helluva often, and finding good porn is like finding rare treasure... not easy and you probably expend more effort than the pleasure you get from it. But still. It's fun every now and then.

What people always forget is your health will decline if you sit at your computer all the time while not getting consistent exercise, yet there's no uproar about that, is there? However, in that sense, if you masturbate too often, then you'll be more likely to stay sitting, so I'd say it could be detrimental to health, only if it increases the likelihood that you'll be sitting around.

Uh... oh... so there's actually 102 ways to polish the rocket? Thank you. Hadn't thought of that one.

RE: Skepticism: Porn... Addiction?
The amount of porn I look at has dramatically decreased over time. I do feel like it impacts you in ways you aren't aware of, especially if you consume a lot of it. But I don't think it's harmful as long as you know it's fantasy and nothing more.

Plus, I've heard that most of the way people do things for the camera don't actually work well in real life. It's all for show as opposed to enjoyment.

Idk- just like anything else, take it in moderation. Don't let it obscure your thinking on the reality of sex. Sex is far messier, smellier, funny-sounding, and more complicated in real life lol.

But I think it can develop into some sort of addiction in extreme cases for some people.

RE: Skepticism: Porn... Addiction?
Can porn be addictive? I don't know. I'm not a sociologist. All I can say is that I've frequently viewed sexually explicit material ever since I was a teenager and my life would have been rather boring without it. My best sexual relationship was with a woman who liked porn as much as I did.
