Sadly, as the sober person there, I still lost both games. Other two folks finished two bottles of wine between them and one had some whiskey as well.

I've performed a lot of less-than-perfect acts that I'm still working through forgiving myself for, as well. Forgiving myself for them is really tough, based on the belief that some "perfect" being was looking over my shoulder, judging, and I felt that I should be "perfect", whatever that means. A lot of it is like, as a child, my mother telling me about nuns making confession, and the priests likening it to "being stoned with popcorn". All this, even though I haven't believed in a deity for decades. Such is the depth of the programming. Dodgy

You don't have to share the "sins" if you don't want to, but it would possibly be informative to know that process.

As promised...

Not so much made me smile as made me laugh, but today was our Retreat/Vision Quest at the public library. Got there early and was reading outside when I had a pair of Mormon missionaries interrupt me. "Good morning Elders" got them excited, thinking I was already primed. But after some small talk and such, told them I already had a religion, but that I appreciated the thought and wished them luck.

Successfully rolled to combat the urge to ask some questions like (and this is off the top of my head from having a Mormon gaming group previously and some stuff I've read):
  • Why did the witnesses at the front of the Book of Mormon leave the church if they knew it was true?
  • Why were there horses in America prior to the Europeans bringing them over?
  • How did small families manage to create warring nations in the millions in less than a thousand years?
  • Where are all the steel mills, weapons, armor, etc. we should be finding from these nations?
  • Why does the Book of Mormon contain translation errors specific to the 19th century King James Bible?
  • What's up with your 200+ splinter groups?
  • Why have we found no evidence of chariots in the Americas when the BoM mentions them?
  • Why did the unchangeable doctrine of polygamy, which Joseph Smith said was unchangeable, change when Utah wanted statehood?
  • Why was Joseph Smith armed and why did he shoot 3 people when your church claims he died a martyr and without a fight?
  • Why did Joseph Smith allow black people the priesthood, have Brigham Young take it away, and it only be re-allowed in the late 1970s (and why did you reverse course on the whole black people were punished for their pre-life actions in the war in Heaven)?
  • Related to the last one, why does your stuff on marriage still contain a line condemning interracial marriage?
  • If Mormons aren't allowed to drink, gamble, etc. why is it okay for the Marriott chain to sub-lease out the bars and casinos and still profit off of the sins it should discourage?
  • Why is the Book of Abraham papyrus that Joseph Smith claimed to translate from Reformed Egyptian, really just instructions for a funeral preparation?
  • If the Book of Mormon was the most perfect book ever written, as claimed by Joseph Smith, why is it continually updated and revised?
  • Have you ever heard of Ethan Smith's book "View of the Hebrews"? It seems to parallel much of the content of the Book of Mormon, was written 7 years earlier, and within 100 miles of Joseph Smith's home.
  • In 2 Nephi, it prophesies the Jews will live once more in their homeland when they have received and acknowledged Christ. However, they're living in Israel now, without having done so, how is that explainable if the prophecies were correct?
  • Brigham Young once taught that the Moon and Sun were inhabited...where are those beings?
  • How do you determine when a prophet was "speaking as a man" instead of a prophet, when revising statements made by them that were once held sacrosanct?
  • Why do the Doctrine and Covenants and Book of Mormon contradict one another about whether there can be forgiveness for a murderer?
  • In the Doctrines and Covenants, the Apostle John supposedly is said to live until the Lord comes again, but your entire church is based in the idea of the Great Apostasy, that there were no true priests/ministers left, where did John go? (Bonus round: What about the 3 Nephite Apostles granted the same?)
  • Did you enjoy your time at Provo at the MTC?

Oh, and they approached me while I was reading part of Godless by Dan Barker.

Need to think of a witty signature.

That's pretty hot, Shai! I've never read the BoM, but those all seem like very good questions.

Thanks! My old gaming group where I was the token non-Mormon probably left the wrong impression with their "you don't mind if we whine about the church before we start" stuff. That's where most of those questions came from, only 3-4 were from actually reading. (Now...I'm just going to hunker down before someone comes to unleash a similar list on my beliefs... Tongue )

You're not here to proselytize. If anyone feels inclined to attack your beliefs unprovoked, then they probably have "personality issues" to work through. I don't care if we're on their turf. It's just dispespectful.

I'll defend you, Shai!
