So, I'm moving soon...
..and I'm bloody terrified. :|

My girlfriend's mother got a very good job, 50 miles east of where we currently are. I myself have recently quit my job (though she does not know yet) and am hoping my independent pursuits of monetary gain pan out - while her daughters are both unemployed, and very sheltered. What I'm scared of in this action though, is not moving in with my girlfriend's family - it's that the the area we're moving to is renowned for it's racism, and historical ties to the KKK.

We're white american-born folks of European descent.. I mean, both our lineages have native american in them as well.. (my GF Souix, myself Abanaki) so their mother seems strangely optimistic about the move. Being in her early 50s, I see some racism in her mannerisms, but nothing to the level you'd expect to see her mingling with Klansmen with... My girlfriend has had times when she's said some quasi-racist things, and I've tried to explain it to her in more open terms. "all the kids at school who teased you might have been hispanic, but that's because you live in the barrio. Nearly everyone is hispanic, not everyone teases you. They teased you because they were assholes, not because of the color of their skin." - and I'd like to think I do get through to her, on some level.

Being an atheist, and very openly into equality... I'm not so sure I'll be safe, and likewise, by relation my girlfriend and her family won't be safe. Maybe I'm paranoid.. but that's how I feel. I'm still going, but I'm very worried about making fast enemies.

True, but the area I'm moving into -is- quite a bit more rural...

Yeah, I lived in Jackson, MS, and currently live in Denham Springs, LA. Livingston Parish is known for being anti-black, but I can tell that the KKK here aren't violent. They're pretty laughable.

I'm almost positive I live in an area that is more racist that you, and there isn't even any talk about the KKK.

So, I think you're safe.

Ah, okay.. that's good to hear. Smile ..I think..? I've passed through Jackson before, on my way to Meridian. I was heading there to meet up with a bisexual friend of mine, though wasn't quite as afraid as I knew I would have to turn around and go home in 12 hours. (horray for 40+ hours of no sleep, to review a planet of the apes themed porno)

Yeah, Jackson is a dump.

Also, I would honestly be worried about Mexican gangs instead of the KKK... being that close to Mexico and such.

No one is safe. Angry

Skepticism is not a position; it is an approach to claims.
Science is not a subject, but a method.
