You know what's the problem?
People are just too easy to influence. That btw counts for pretty much everything. But they are sooooooo fucking easy to mind control. And Religion has the exact tools to do that very very well!
You know... all that shit. Feeling thins, just knowing, seeing...
Ok first of all, all shrinks are supposed to be atheists! And then every religios nut is supposed to get a fucking therapy, talk it all off your non-existing soul, and then go and live your life as if you had only one!

Oh and those fucking arguments all the time. And one would think that there are ANY new arguments coming but no, they are not.
"The eye is so complex, it needs a creator" "Carbon dating doesn't work on all materials" "Look how beautiful the flowers and trees are, and the sun..." "I had an experience" "I saw Jesus" "God told me..." "I feel his presence"
Fuck you and your old old arguments.
That is why theists get so annoyed, while they never come up with a new argument, we already know all of them and are well equipped to not just debunk, but completely CRASH those.

And then I listen to another Atheist Experience, and the next caller asks "but why don't you believe in god" and while I see the host holding back a huge "MOROOOOON!!!" I feel like punching the caller.

You know... You know... I can't even form a straight sentence anymore, from all the thoughts running through my head. I am at the point of circular thoughts.
I feel like I am stuck in a society full of brainwashed idiots, that act so nice and normal but the second you say something against their precious religion, and be it the most logical thing you have ever said, they become nuts.

I mean they react like someone who is addicted and tell them in the face "you need to stop drinking beer or you kill your organs and therefore yourself" and they start explaining that they are not addicted, and they are only having one a day, and anyway why is it your business, and I am not hurting you with my addiction, and anyway you are the one who has the problem because you just hate beer, what did the beer do to you that you are so angry at it...
Yes, I think that is the best parallel I have ever thought of. It is like an addiction. Whole societies, whole countries are made addicted from the earliest age. And those who are not addicted are being treated like they are not normal.
You know what, it is not normal to be addicted, you are not born addicted. You are born with certain senses and needs, but with religion a lot of those senses are being cut off. Thou shalt not think, thou shalt not ask, thou shalt not question, thou shalt give us thy fucking money. And while we, as humans, are so curious, so open to new information, we are being made closed minded.

Fuck I hate this shit.

I hate that even a year before I plan on making a baby, I am already worried that society and school will brainwash my child and it could end up addicted to some fairytale...
I hate that have that worry already but I can not close my mind to this problem.
I hate that we may get a lot of weird, worried, and judgemental looks when we will refuse to babtize our child.
I hate that our child will grow up in a society that basically forces it to stay in the closet because of the disadvantages it will face if it comes out.

Isn't that fucked up? The child isn't even there yet, we are just planning right now and all of this is already a problem. What about kindergarten, what about all the friends...

Like my hubby has been asked to sing in church, although the family knows that he does not believe. Of course he refused, no hard feelings, but probably some disappointment. Not that we wanna hurt people, but we do not want to do churchy stuff as it goes so very much against our principles.

You know, when we came back to Romania, we found a cross hanging over our bed, and we found Mary and Jesus pictures in some rooms on the walls... First thing we had to do, take all of that off... How offensive is that. What would they say if I hung the pic of the flying spagetti monster in their kitchen and an Atheist-A over their bed... ... See how fucked up this is. I wouldn't dare to do that.

This is so fucked up, so very...

RE: So sick of it!!!!
I was in the car with my mom today, so she was controlling the radio, which was on some Christian station and James Dobson was on it. Anyway, just chiming in to say I felt the rage today. ^_^

Though my biggest in-the-car rage was the time my mom put on a "comedy" CD (I forget the name) where some stupid bitch was actually making fun of science and evolution, because that's a dumb thing to believe when it was really Jeebus that done it. And people were laughing.

I don't let 'em get to me but that's probably quite a bit harder in Romania where 90% of the population believes in God. I blame Dracula. Big Grin
Sorry hun, but it needs to come off my chest somewhere if I don't wanna shout "MORON" into the faces of everyone I meet outside.
And yes, difficult in Romania. Problem ist not that they believe in god. Problem is that they are ALL nuts about god.
You buy a car? Get the priest to bless my car (and of course pay him).
You are worried? Let the priest pray for you (and of course pay him).
I see rosaries and icon cards in almost every car on the road. When we borrowed a car from someone, guess what, a rosary hanging in it, so first thing we did, taking the rosary off.
But not only that.
Romania is a poor country, and that is visible where you walk around. Old, broken buildings, some streets look like patchwork, you simply see the communism from 20 years ago. It obviously takes a lot of time to get over it. But, while everything looks poor and old and broken, you have a HUGE churche on every fucking corner! And if there is no church you will find one of those small things, that just have an icon and a few candles and flowers in them, not a chapel.
I think I will make a few pics, next time I am in the city... Just so I can give a picture on how sickly rich the church is in such a poor country. And no, monestaries do not do social work around here, they stay in and pray. All fucking day long.
And the priests will do what they get paid for, no pay, no service.

The church is one of the reasons the country is poor. Keep the people, particularly the women, out of schools and universities, keep the plebs ignorant, on their knees, pregnant, and not in the workforce, and you have a paying congregation.

RE: So sick of it!!!!
I know Leela I sympathize with your rage. I live in Kenya, most of the species that preceded our own were discovered here in the country I mean we have a museum where you can actually see the bones all year round, not photos of the bones but the bones themselves. Yet literal belief in the Adam and Eve story is still overwhelmingly dominant. (and those who don't believe in Adam and Eve believe whatever it is Muslims believe).

I am convinced it is something in the air at church/mosque, kind of like what they do at casinos.

I have two kids already and I can't find any school (including the government run ones) that doesn't begin every day with christian or muslim prayers. I am under pressure from my family and my ex wife's family to get the kids baptized. My standard answer is they can get baptized once they are old enough to decide for themselves and I am the one being accused of brainwashing the kids. Who is doing the brainwashing all I want is for my kids to have a chance to apply their brains to the facts and from there decide what they want to do. (I'll never forgive them if they pick christianity if you have to pick some fantasy I'd rather something cool like Zeus or Thor or better yet something from the local animist religions at least those gods made no attempt to claim benevolence).

Anyway don't run your head through the wall, I suspect it would be painful and wouldn't achieve much. A fun activity is to study up some other religion apart from christianity something that the guys in your area know nothing about like the facing mount Kenya sect we have here in Kenya and claim to be an adherent of that religion. It allows you to be equally obtuse and claim all types of tomfoolery. Its worth a few laughs, or maybe that's just me.

I am actually talking to an atheist friend of mine who is a lawyer to see if I can sue the government and claim it's against my religion to pay tax so they should respect my religion. It's the central tenet of my religion paying tax. I'm taking suggestions of what I should call my religion.

RE: So sick of it!!!!
Coming from almost the same historical background as Leela, I'd venture a guess that this large number of religious people is to a large extent due to the fact that religion was banned during the communist regime, so people saw it as a means of going against the regime. When communism fell, openly going to church felt like an act of long-denied freedom and a "screw you" to the dying regime.

Also, at least in my country, a lot of those people are not really that religious, it's a very external kind of religiousness - icons, rosaries, even fasting (which here means no meat and diary products), but not a lot of what you'd call real faith (not like you have in a lot of places in the States).

Or at least that's how it is here. People go to church to light a candle for health or luck and to me that's not so much religion, as it is just another superstition. Pointless and annoying, yes, but not religious fundamentalism. Which doesn't make it any pleasanter or easier to swallow.

RE: So sick of it!!!!
I'll see your rage and raise you one.

The History Channel has been airing a show titled "Mankind - The History of All of Us." I thought the first show or two were interesting, so I watched a missed episode last night. There was a segment on Jeebus - as an historical figure! As a this-was-for-real historical figure. "Romans said very little about him." (Uh, as in not. one. word.) Then they had some preacher type opining about how wonderful and life/history-changing this event was, beaming with all his inner smugness and flashing his pearly whites.

History, my panoramic ass!

We have enough youth. How about looking for the Fountain of Smart?

What war? What war is being fought over religion? Even the Crusades weren't fought over religion. Northern Ireland was not about religion. Nothing in the Middle East today is over religion. No one fights over religion. In all of WWII nothing was fought over religion. I suppose if you go back to the 1500's when Henry the VIII was grabbing power and separated from the RCC, then perhaps there was some blood shed in the name of religion, but even then it was about political power and his desire to divorce his first wife for Anne Bolyn; it wasn't really about religious people fighting because they disagreed with each other religiously.

You think you know something. But you only know what you want to know.

Quote:Why do you need to hold on to this shit.

Because it's irrational to be an atheist. I believe God exists. I believe God is ultimately incomprehensible, and I think the life and teachings of Jesus Christ are the best GUI we have for understanding God.

I don't belong to any religious organization; I don't follow anyone. I have made my own religion for myself. I am a freethinker.

Quote:Grow up already. You know that the fitting line is in a holy book? In the bible?
Here we go: When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me.

That was Paul's opinion about love/charity being the foundation of the Gospel. I don't know if I agree with that. I use five Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, and Thomas. They are my Holy Scriptures, and then only in the manner in which I interpret them. To prove that I wrote and published a synthesis of these Gospels called, "The Veridican Gospel of Jesus Christ."

Quote:Yes I know, it is difficult to let go of all of that, I've been there myself. Many have been there.
But you know what. Thank your parents and or your country, teachers, society that you have been brainwashed to the point of not being ABLE to think, not even having the idea or the question that probably something else is more accurate.

Soooo, when you go against that brainwashing as you put it, you are anti-social, right?

Quote:What's more accurate?
You are finite. Your time is finite. You live one life and then you die. When you are dead you are no more. Your life has no higher meaning. The existence of this planet and how evolution went is a huge big big coincidence. And yes, this is possible. No creator, because the idea of a "creation" and of "creating" something is also manmade.

Really? Prove it. Never mind, you can't. What you have there is faith, atheist faith. It's a neghead reaction to all the reasons you don't fit in with others. It's what makes you feel superior rather than inferior to others in "society." You are a misfit and you can't handle that, so in your mind you tear life down completely. It's a spiritual suicide. That's what atheism is: spiritual suicide.

Quote:No, I do not have it wrong. And yes I am fucking pissed and tired of this shit. What is soooo difficult at turning your grey matter on and try out LOGIC? Guess what, it works!

So, let's start with logic then. If a tree falls in the forest and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound?

I'm not joking. You want a logical discussion on the existence of God, just start by answering that question. In this thread, I'm only going to respond to you, no one else. I will read what others write--everything anyone else writes, but I'm only going to converse with you. I'm calling you out. You want to match your logic with mine, let's go. Smartass
