So, we're having a, uh, white Christmas...
Just not quite the way we'd like to have it.

On December 21/22 my part of the world (Greater Toronto Area) got a heavy dose of freezing rain. We went without power for most of two days, during which we enjoyed the dark winter and a very cold house. For the past two nights I went to sleep to the sound of breaking trees and the blue/green flashes of power line failures.

The power is back on, but the neighbourhood is littered with debris. Everything is pretty icy still, except for the roads.

Here's some pics of tree carnage:

Wow, glad you are well! Do you have power and heat back yet?

Yeah, we have the heat back. The house was 11 degrees this morning, so it was a bit chilly.

I spent the last hour cleaning up the branches around the yard. As a gardening enthusiast, the number of trees that will have to be cut down after the storm is depressing. All these 40+ year-old maples and ashes losing almost all of their upper branches, some stripped down to the roots... My neighbour's tree is the one that's split in three by a shed. It's around 20 years old I think - it grew from a seed from one of the trees in my backyard.

If something can be destroyed by the truth, it might be worth destroying.

Oh man - those trees are heartbreaking! Parts will grow back of course but, some will stay deformed.

Will you be staying there for the week or heading to relatives?

The situation's fine now (apart from occasional branches breaking), so it's just a matter of not falling on your ass when you walk outside. What we need are a few days of sunshine and temperatures slightly above zero degrees to melt the ice. We might get that on the 26th-29th.

If something can be destroyed by the truth, it might be worth destroying.

That sucks. We had an ice storm like that here a few years ago. Over half the town was without power for a week. By the end of it people were so sick of it. I remember going to McDonald's for breakfast and the tension in the air was so thick, it felt like at any moment people would start fighting over nothing. I couldn't wait to get back to my warm, peaceful house! Tongue

My neighbor and I were the only two houses in the neighborhood that had power, I've never felt so lucky.

But now I have come to believe that the whole world is an enigma, a harmless enigma that is made terrible by our own mad attempt to interpret it as though it had an underlying truth.

True. But on the bright side. Maple is beautiful for woodworking.

It never seems like the guys cutting it up and hauling it away are willing to knock off what they'll sell the trees for to a lumber yard as raw materials.
