I used to be an Administrator of an Internet Forum whose primary focus was related to Fishing. This forum had a well-defined mission statement that was visibly posted on the forum main page which stated that our primary purpose was to serve the Fishing Community, and that any posts that might interfere with that statement only existed at the discretion of the Admins and Mods.

Thus, even though we had forums for “Off-color Jokes” and “Politics” and such, we would put a stop to any thread that we figured distracted the forum members who were primarily just interested in Fishing-related topics. Our Forum members appreciated this policy, and this policy allowed us to remove without protest a lot of topics that were borderline racist, sexist, sexual, homophobic, overtly religious, hateful and just plain distracting. In short, we pretty much kept the forum topics revolving about the Mission Statement.

I looked on this forum for a Mission Statement, but didn’t find one. So…Maybe this forum could use a concise and well-defined Mission Statement that is very-visibly posted?

I don’t know. I'm just speculating. I could be wrong.

Far as I know there is no mission statement, and it actually bothered me when I was thinking about joining. What are these people here for? It's a good question, and perhaps it would clarify things to a point where one could better decide whether to join. It also would give some structure.

As far as a side-forum goes, I should think it would be a section with a warning - and that section should have an age button, yes. The young people didn't come here for that in the first place. They mostly come for support and then stay on. And I see no reason to admit porn, like it's been said, the web is full of all the porn anyone could want and then some. But we could put the pedos, conspiracy theorists , Nazis and what all folk show up because they have a bee in their bonnet about some non atheist/theist topic.

Personally I don't think they belong here anyway, but some people seem to think they do.

The good thing about a side forum is that it can be blocked from google, so we don't grow entire communities on these off-topics.

The other good thing about the side forum idea is that it may bring back some of the members who have been here for a long time and walked out in disgust caused by some of these off topics. It will allow us to build the community further too because we won't have a lot of people deciding not to join because of some of these off topics being plastered up and down the entire message board.

I can care less about porn being admitted. I was using that as a tool to attack the logic of banning that and not pedophiles.

A mission statement?

My view has always been that this is a place for rational discussion on any topic. With Seth being the main reason people join the most popular topic is atheism and theism, which I think is a good think.

In that case the name of the forum is misleading. People come here because they think it's about atheism and it's thought provoking. They get turned off when they see it's not. That is a big part of the issue IMO.

We still have the A&T discussion. The only difference is that, instead of being the only focus, it's the main focus with other smaller focuses alongside it.

It should be clear to anyone that the forum isn't solely for atheistic discussion when they first access the place and see a Politics section and a Sports section and all the others.

Well, these type topics are expected in most forums. Most any forum, regardless of topic, will have one or more sections on stuff people in general want to talk about. People get to know each other and want to share some other aspects of their lives.

Are you thinking that we may be better off putting in writing somewhere that this place is for all discussion and not just for atheist and theist discussion?

Personally, I think having an "off topic" section will be a lot more beneficial than a mission statement. And as far as a mission statement goes, I do think there should be one that explains that the forum encourages exchange between theists and atheists, because that is the way it is, and some people get their panties all in a knot about it. Topics like food and whatever are innocuous and just allow members to bond further. They are expected.

An off-topic section puts an end to having the entire place littered with stuff that many people do not want to see. You may remember me suggesting that many moons ago.

I categorically oppose people using this forum to promote paedophilia by stealth.

If a paedophile wants help in his obsession with children that's another story; I don't think that is the case re the current thread.

The nurturing of paedophiles is akin providing free drinks and weird rationales to an alcoholic.

Question for admin. People reporting that they abuse children....aren't you required to report them to the authorities?
