RE: So, whose forum is this, anyway?
I haven't been on this forum long, but I felt the need to state my POV.

Free speech is free speech. If you don't like what he posts then don't read it. That goes for other posts that you "find disruptive". You can disagree with him, hate what he posts, or think he is a complete dickhead because of what he posts. It still doesn't mean he should be censored. You can even comment on his threads if you disagree.

Also, just because a majority find someone disruptive doesn't make them right, and it doesn't give them right to ban people who are in the minority.

I have been in forums where people were banned because they did not have the same opinion on certain subjects as the people who ran the forum and the majority of its members. It shut everything down. It was pretty much like a church. There was no discussion on the topic unless you agreed with everything and shunned the opposition. Even the quarantine idea sounds like it would end up as "agree to what we say or you won't get out" type of deal. It is a form of censorship.

In conclusion, I think as long as members don't violate the rules, they should have their say.

Anyway, where is this hostility you refer to?

I thought the comment about it being my forum was passive hostility. If it wasn't then I apologise. I guess I feel like every time the mob forms against someone I become the target for the shit being flung when they aren't banned because I'm so vocal on the whole free-speech thing.

I haven't asked for a banning. Precisely because I know how that would go. There is no point in repeat situations, one must evolve from that.

RE: So, whose forum is this, anyway?
Lol if TTA was Talkbass (a forum I frequented for a very long while) the ban hammer would be bloodied with this threads participants and those who would dare to question the authority of the almighty mods in a public thread....of course you couldn't even mention religion or politics there.

I think it's kind of remarkable that this place is as civil and open as it is, it's a rare gem of a forum.

As Stark use to say when he was Kingpin, TTA is not for everybody.
There are other forums, atheists forums, that have stricter rules and such and are more focused etc...
If that is what you are looking for then perhaps you'd have better luck in a place like that. Nobody is forcing you to stay.
I'm not saying fuck off we don't want you, I'm (and Stark was) saying this is us, that is them, the choice is yours.
Obviously we'd like nice people like you to stay, but shit happens.

TTA has always had near complete freedom of speech. That's what it's always stood for and that is what it always will.

As for what I was saying to Chas, what forum have you been on the last year a half home-boy??
Seriously, you must have known this would never be up for discussion.

As for "keeping on topic" of atheism. We're bored. That's the way I see it, the older (longer on the forum, not age) members have done every religious/atheist thread out there. The whole atheist/theism forum is one big "same ol' shit, different day". And newer members like yourself come here for said threads, the same threads longer time members have done over and over.

There's only so much you can tell people how stupid the bible is before you just give up.

Wow muffs, I've never seen you speak so much sense all at once. Big Grin

Seriously though, he's pretty much hit the nail on the head with everything there.

Nope.
You both continue to miss the point.

I'm not suggesting stricter rules, I'm suggesting laxer rules with more room for judgement.

I'm suggesting that good sense and judgement be used to rid the forum of troublemakers.

If pedophiles and conspiracy folk and Nazis can do so, most certainly Chas can do so.

To answer the question, it's Hughsie's forum.

No, it is not Hughsie's forum.

The argument is about what the rules should be.

In the rules of the forum, it says:

Quote:This forum isn't just for atheists. It is for anyone - no matter what race, religion, sex, sexual preference, or anything else. Anyone is welcome to participate and express their opinions.

This forum is based around the principle of free-speech. We are far more tolerant of swearing, sexual language, and personal attacks than most forums. This means that this place is not for everyone. If you are easily offended by such things this may not be the place for you. In line with this we do not censor posts (except porn). You have a complete right to say whatever you want to say and use any type of language to convey that message; however, you are solely responsible for the consequences and possible retaliation from other forum members due to your choice of words. We also do not delete or close threads or posts at the request of the original poster. Once a thread or post is posted it's here to stay.

So the rules essentially state that you have a right to post what you want, just as anyone can refute it in any way they want, or don't read what they post. Grow a pair, stop throwing a temper tantrum, and scroll past what they post.

Because someone or even the majority view someone as "disruptive" doesn't mean that their right to free speech should be denied, especially when there is also a neat little feature on the forum where you can put a specific member on your ignore list.

ETA:

The original poster said he wanted to ban "disruptive" members. In two posts above this one, he wants to ban "troublemakers". What does he define a "troublemaker" as? What does he define as "disruptive"? That's too vague. If you want the rules changed, you have to be clear as to what you want the new rule to be, even if it isn't going to be changed.

The four strict rules that are on this forum are incredibly clear. The rule Chas wants to add isn't, and in its vagueness, violates the free speech policy IMO.
