Really? I have always heard and called it tonic. I have also heard some people say soda and I have a few friends who call all soda "a coke."

My family is from Boston, I spent some time growing up slightly north of Boston. But we also had a vacation home in CC so maybe that's where tonic is coming from? Who knows? Lol.

Where in MA are you located?

In a rural town of 6500 people some 30 miles west-northwest of Boston, what is lately referred to as "Metrowest".

Yabut, yabut there are other factors significantly influencing that; soda is most probably not the driving force.
