Solar Plane Flies Around The World
The John Alcock and Arthur Brown of solar powered flight. This will become routine hopefully in the not too far future.
Quote:SUN HATERS, TO the left. Solar Impulse 2 touched down in Abu Dhabi today, becoming the first fuel-free plane to successfully circumnavigate the globe. OK, so the 22,000-mile trip took a minute: The solar-powered bird lifted off from the same city in March 2015. But despite a few setbacks, the plane and Swiss pilot Bertrand Piccard (who took shifts with fellow flyer André Borschberg) touched down without incident.

RE: Solar Plane Flies Around The World
I look to one day see solar powered aircraft -- with big, light, powerful battery banks and solar panels -- used as wide footprint cellphone towers.... All they have to do, is fly up over the weather (100,000 ft or so) and they could orbit an area providing coverage akin to satellite phones -- at a fraction of the cost........

What with the new helium deposits found in Tanzania -- it might even be a hybrid lighter than air aircraft....

100,000 ft is quite optimistic due to extremely low air pressures at that altitude; 50,000 or so feet is possible.

Now we have to address the power requirements to broadcast to and from a source which is at least 10 miles from you, far greater than conventional cell networks today are.
