I dunno... I guess I just don't get the mind of a theist ...

I rarely give a QFT. When I do it's because the word choice is just sheer perfection in my opinion.
And my opinion plus $1.50 will get you a coffee.

One word: fear.

Check out my atheism blog. It's just a blog, no ads, no revenue, no gods.

RE: Sometimes I think they're lying!
I think two things drive theist beliefs. The first and foremost is the hope for an afterlife. The second is often they are fearful of how they might behave without an external force which tells them what to do. This has been my opinion for a long time. I can accept that they have their own reason and even adults who believe there is a god do not trouble me much.

I do think that it is correct to say that it is the fundamentalists who are most likely to believe the really bat shit crazy aspects of the bible. I find this particularly frightening when those people are reasonably well educated. I have related here before about talking with an engineer co worker (who had graduated from a well thought of public university) who clung to the creation myth and would not even accept my offer of intelligent design. I was frightened by the conversation and considered myself lucky that our work paths kept us apart for almost all the rest of my career.

I'd love to have a holy spirit. I suspect that's one bottle of rum that would never run empty!

One wonders why an all-loving god (who tortures people for not believing in him) would withhold the only means with which a person can believe in him...

That would be to presume that there is a god, and without any evidence for such would make the arguement moot.

Really kinda simple.... "what if's" are not open to discussion. (unless your drunk or tripping) Drinking Beverage
