I see you've forgotten how to use the 'reply' button again but I'm guessing that was directed to me... (un)fortunately I have no clue what you are trying to say.

From a talk by Dan Dennett:

Quote:This is a lovely book by a friend of mine named Lee Siegel, who's a professor of religion, actually, at the University of Hawaii, and he's an expert magician, and an expert on the street magic of India, which is what this book is about, "Net of Magic." And there's a passage in it which I would love to share with you. It speaks so eloquently to the problem. "'I'm writing a book on magic,' I explain, and I'm asked, 'Real magic?' By 'real magic,' people mean miracles, thaumaturgical acts, and supernatural powers. 'No,' I answer. 'Conjuring tricks, not real magic.' 'Real magic,' in other words, refers to the magic that is not real; while the magic that is real, that can actually be done, is not real magic."

So your god created people and gave them the ability to reason but rewards only those who refuse to exercise that faculty? What a jackass.

Maybe you should consider that god hides himself to see who is so gullible that they'll believe anything and rewards those of us that do not believe. If so, you are fucked.

SV still doesn't understand that it's not enough for his God merely to exist. His God also has to be worthy of worship as well.

I suspect he conflates "worthy of worship" and "something to be afraid of"

I'm not going for a gotcha moment. When Mormon missionaries come to our door to sell their fundamentalist theology I confront them rather than just send them away because I think that it's good for them to hear a different point of view that I know they'll never hear from their Christian cohorts. I'm not expecting immediate conversions. I'm just hoping that the perspectives I introduce to them will give them reason to doubt some portion of their faith. Usually I have found that when I talk about what the Bible, fundamentalist Christians will listen respectfully because they generally think that they know the Bible far better than do I. But when I show them that the Bible says things they don't actually believe, then they start to wonder if maybe their entire belief system is on shaky footing. That's what I'm going for-- I'm sowing the seeds of doubt.

> I've tried this tactic with Jehovah's Witnesses countless times, but it never works. The moment I begin criticizing the Bible or quoting its questionable passages, they immediately leave. They've come to my door with the notion that they're already right. Their beliefs are not up for discussion. It is my beliefs that are negotiable. JW's are closed-minded, intellectual illiterates who cannot be reasoned with under any circumstances. Dodgy

Look at all the responsibility and work they can avoid if their followers, like unthinking sheep, accept everything they're told without the burden of proof. It is not for nothing that groups of churchgoers are often referred to as a flock. Consider
